How to get rid of BAKED on masking tape

Well, our sunroof shattered and I had to patch it up really quickly. I only had two options, masking tape and duct tape. So I used the masking tape. The masking tape stayed there for a while in the sun. When the dealer took off the tape to repair the sunroof the adhesive started to bake into the paint. There is also some left over masking tape on there and the only way that seems to work is by scratching it off with my fingernails.

As for the baked on adhesive? Do I want to wet sand this? The most abrasive combo I have is Menzerna FPII with an SFX-1 PAD :grrr

3m makes an adhesive remover in an aerosal can that owrks very good on stuff like this. Goo Gone also does. Put a little on and use a plastic razor blade.

Prep sol, mineral spirits, goo gone, 3M adhesive remover, etc. Use some kind of solvent before using abrasives. Like joshtpa said you could used a plastic razor blade if all else fails but some kind of solvent you normally use for tar removal should work.

WD 40 is the way to go. I left it on my paint overnight and there was no ill effect. Make sure you wash , clean , polish and wax afterward.

3m general purpose adhesive remover will get rid of that. Just apply some and let it sit, the adhesive will swell up as it takes on the 3m product, then it will be like removing the sticky stuff that holds your credit card to the paper when you get a new on in the mail. Danase has a plastic razor kit.

It should wipe right off with most solvents or adhesive removers. 3M adhesive remover will be your best bet. Make sure you do it in the shade where the finish won't get too hot. You'll definately have to wax after too. A plastic razor blade really isn't needed. It could do more harm than good if you have'nt used one before.

Ok, well heres how it went today. Goo Gone Did noting except for remove the actually piece of masking tape, I used a plastic razor blade with this. The adhesive that was baked on still did not come off. I tried WD40 and that did not work.

What did work.

Goof off. I did not want to use this product since basically what it is is a paint remover.

But it worked. Got all the baked on adhesive off with a microfiber cloth and a small amount of Goof off

I wonder how my paint is doing as of right now.

Might want to cover that up with a wax or sealant. But first make sure that the all of the solution is off first.

I would seriously consider an alcohol wipedown also, without hesitating. That is some serious stuff and has been known to eat plastic alive. Did you let WD dwell at all?

I have yet to find an animal too tough for WD-40.......

What's the rationale behind this? Once Goof Off gets on platic, how will alcohol save it? Alcohol isn't putting moisture back into the plastic?
