how to clean wash mitts

I wash my mitts by hand in a bucket of clean water & dish soap. To rinse, I stick the hose inside the wash mitt to rinse it from the inside out to flush out any grit or dirt deep down in the fibers of the mitt. Then wring out & allow to air dry.

anything-goes,

Is your wash mitt made of MF by any chance? If so, then that is a very common problem. Once something gets stuck in those, they seem to never come out. I'm pretty happy with what I'm using now, which is the sheepskin mitt from CMA.

If you have a sheepskin washmitt the inside-out flushing won't work because of the leather backing. I just alternate blasting it with water with the grain of the fur, and dunking it underwater while "fluffing" the fur with my fingers. Usually works okay.

Depending on the kind of mit you use, yes. Honestly, I would recommend washing by hand no matter what kind of mitt because it will keep the mitt in better shape longer.

I wash my CMA MF wash mitts in the washing machine and they do just fine. Like Intermezzo says though, sometimes little specks are extremely difficult to get out. I usually use tweezers to pluck out tiny contaminants.
