How to clean the California Duster?

Would like to clean 6 months old duster. What should I use? I am thinking to use Meg Gold Class shampoo or liquid cloth detergent and then air dry.

The duster should not be washed, the dirtier it gets the better it works (I've been using mine now for almost five years without it being washed)

If you wash it your left with a cotton mop!

 What about dirt that trap inside the duster could cause swirl marks? Does shaking the duster itself really clean well? Kind of nervous using on my cars, one black another one is red color.

Car Duster:

The best known brand (California Car Duster) it can be used to remove pollen or light dust without causing scratches by applying very little surface pressure with the duster, dusting with long strokes in one direction only. Shake the duster occasionally to ensure any particles picked up will drop out rather than come to the surface while your using it.

It important to use the duster only for the removal of dry surface dust, if the vehicle has oily road film, road tar, damp pollen or dust, etc the vehicle surface should be washed

When the duster is first purchased it should be wrapped in newspaper to remove any excess paraffin wax, the duster should not be washed, the dirtier it gets the better it works (I've been using mine now for almost five years without it being washed)

whats the consequence if you forgot to wrap it in a newspaper?

The initial excess of paraffin in the CCD could cause some streaking. Also do not use one on a hot surface for the same reason.

the consequence is that you will have parafin streaks on the vehicle that will appear as you dust. at least that was my experience when i first got mine and did not take enough time to let the duster sit wrapped in newspaper. i made a whole host of newbie mistakes besides that one. CONSEQUENTLY....

got another carduster and after properly introducing the car duster to its new vehicle, have been satisfied with its performance ever since.

I've had my CCD for about 3 years now and have never attempted to "clean" it. To remove dust build-up in the fibers, I run the nozzle of my shop vac across and vacuum up any loose debris/dust. I do this about every 3-4 months.

The instructions with my CCD said to allow it air dry for 48 hours before using. Did it, used it and no streaks.

There are instructions with it for washing it. I washed mine and will have to evaluate its performance now. It does not have waxy feeling anymore and I thought that was bad.

i think, now that you've washed it, your probably going to just smear the dust around ( instead of picking it up) and scratch the car. throw it away !!!!

Nowadays, many stores carry the CCD. I went to target and saw the Baja Sol brand and it still said "The orginal california Car Duster" on it although it was made by baja sol. i saw other ones to that claim to be the CCD at stores like wal-mart.

I'm confused as to which one i should get ( I want the most effective one).

Can someone upload a Pic of the most effective CCD (the real CCD) and i'll get that one. Thanx.

i'd say its not the brightest idea to wash it. It works better the dirtier it gets.

I have heard a lot of good things about the oxo duster.

Which reminds me that I have to open up my new CCD and air it out so I can use it on Saturday. FWIW the directions do say you can handwash with Woolite and then air it dry.

I just buy a new one every few years. They don't cost much. I have a whole bunch of old ones that probably work just fine but I just can't use a really dirty one on my car.

I will only use the CCD with the wooden handle. I've actually compared the plastic handled ones to the wooden handle dusters and there is a distinct difference in the threads and overall quality.

Yes, I'm anal. :p

I'm going to try out the OXO next time.

I got an OXO duster for Christmas and I do like it a bit better than the CCD, which I also have, if for no other reason than the rubber handle, which is more paint friendly if you drop it.

It seems like the mop head part is fuller, but maybe that's just me. I also like the blue color better. :D
