How "solid" should Mother's Carnuba be?

Hey everyone!



I recently got a 2004 Honda Accord EX for the wifey, and found this site while searching for the best way to care for it. And let's just say...after ~$100 and an order from PakShak, there's no turning back now! :D



Anyways, I was wondering how hard the Mother's carnuba was fresh from the tin? I picked up the last one at PepBoys, and it was solid like a brick...much more so than the #26 Meguiars I picked up. I'm wondering if it was just very old. It was not even a paste consistency.



Is this normal?



I wasn't sure, so I used my #26 instead, over a coat of Mother's sealer & glaze, and was very happy w/ the results.
 
If it is there Mother's Pure Carnuba Wax, it is very hard, like you said, like a brick in the tin. I've use Mother's off and on for over 30 years and this is normal.
 
Yes, it is the pure carnuba.

So my next question is, how do you soften it up enough to apply it w/ an applicator?
 
With S100, a very hard-in-the-jar carnauba, you just wipe the applicator over the rock to pick up some product, then wipe it on the paint. You don't really need much on the applicator. Only a thin layer goes on the paint, so you only need a little on the applicator.



edit: that being said, I've never used this particular carnauba.
 
The heat of friction from the applicator is enough to liquify the amount of wax you need on the applicator.
 
I've used the Mothers that you are referring to on my Max and my Liberty on the weekend.



It is hard as a rock in the can/tin.



Mothers recommends using a damp applicator. Just rub it over the wax and then apply to the paint. Like someone else mentioned you do not need a lot of it on the applicator and it spreads a long way.

Dampen the applicator (I prefer the closed cell foam applicators) with an instant detailer, instead of water.



BTW, the formula for that product is a hard cake one - it's supposed to be hard. But, that doesn't make it hard to use....
 
one thing i love about mothers waxes is they are easy on, easy off without effort. I was a big user of mothers cleaner wax b4 i started detailing in steps.
