How safe are the porter cable Random orbitals

Hmmm. Up to a 6 inch backplate might fix your problems. But I did hear 6 ounce cw, 5 inch backplate for 6-6.5 inch pads is a good combo.
Redondo I won't use that analogy, but I do like the idea of it! :-P
 
I use the 6 oz. cw with a 5" backing plate is quite smooth up to 5.5 when i set it to 6 it's like warp engines were turned on....
so I don't use 6 (scares me too much) other than that no vibration.

As far as the time issue goes, working with a PC is far more efficient than working by hand and I really don't want to use a rotary. Please elaborate on this DeWalt polisher. Thanks!!

I use the Dewalt DW443 random orbital polisher, it comes with a descent sized velcro backing pad so any standard rotary pad will fit, I usually start with a medium polish foam then work to a final polish wax one. I like it but it vibrates the plastic handle like mad, I usually just hold it like a palm sander near the head, for some reason that cuts down on the vibration by a huge amount. I have never needed to turn it up to 6, it orbits at 6k RPM's then which is just insane, I usually use it around 3. This wasn't designed to be used as a detailing product, it is actually a sander that comes with a dust bag!:lmfao
