HI-

I'm new to the site and looking for help:

1) Just bought a new convert 8 mn ago, when should I get the first wash, wax, polish done?

2)how often do I need to get it the exterior washed, waxed and polish? yearly? 2x/year?

I've heard various things from every other month to once a yr. Didn't see answera in the detailing guide. Thanks. -DE

Hello, and welcome. For my own personal cars, I was and wax the wifes car every week, and I'll polish it once or twice per year if needed. It is a daily driver. For my car, it gets washed and waxed usually once every month or so. Polish on a as neded basis. My car is basically a garage queen, used occasionally during the summer months. For my daily driver, a '95 Jeep Cherokee, I'll wash and wax every two weeks, polish 2 times per year.

Hi and welcome bimmerGirl.

Ideally you should wash your car (properly) at least once a week. Or if your like me every 2 or 3 days.

A full detail on the exterior (adds claying, polishing, and sealing/waxing) is a twice a year thing at least.

How often you need to wax will depend alot on your choice of wax. Most say a Carnauba wax will last only three month (and maybe shorter depending on the heat and humidity) before it needs to be re-applied.

Synthetic waxes and Sealants will last alot longer.

Your on the right track though, if you get started early on maintaining the cars finish it will still look it's best years down the line.

You should get some wax on there sooner than later. Part of the purpose of waxing is to protect that paint, so you ought to start asap.

Washing: Depends on how dirty you would allow your car to become. I usually wash once it begins to form a noticeable layer of dust. Could be every 1-6 weeks, depending on how much the car is driven and your personal requirements.

Polishing: This is a very broad term. The short answer is when your car needs it. It's very dependant on personal preference and car condition. It also depends if your car gets scratches or swirls put into it over the course of time, by either carelessness or the person washing your car. If your car is washed near perfectly with no swirl marks, I'd say you can polish it maybe once a year. More or less often depending on how often you like to start over and refresh your detail. Some people use extremely light polishes every month.

If your car gets a lot of scratches and swirl marks, it may need polishing more often, and with a stronger polish. In this case you to evaluate why your swirls and scratches are coming back so soon. Defects are removed by using a polish that removes enough paint to get rid of them. Kind of like liquid sanding. So using a stronger polish more often means you are removing clear coat over and over.

Waxing: How often depends on how long your previous wax lasts and the condition of the car. The most durable synthetics last more than six months. You can also use undurable waxes that only last a few weeks. You want to keep a coat of wax on there at all times, so the short answer is 2 weeks to 6 months, in general. If your car sees harsh conditions, you should refresh the wax more often. So for example, if your wax lasts 8 weeks, you may consider polishing and waxing every six weeks. Once the six weeks are over, use a very light polish just to clean the surface up a bit, and then rewax. Or you may just choose to rewax at the 8 week mark. It's all up to you.

There's no such thing as a 5 year super wax, so don't buy into that!

Wow, that's a lot of waxing!

Also look into glazes which are not as abrasive as a polish, in most cases. Use a QD in between washes to keep the vehicle looking nice (every 2 days should be fine).

Thanks to all! I see there's no real consensus even among the aficionados...I guess I'll go with some middle ground approach...to be decided. BTW, what's QD?

QD = Quick detailer. These spray products are sort of like Windex for your paint. They aide you in removing thumb prints, very light dust, or water spots from the paint. I only use them after a wash, or to help remove wax residue. They can help refresh your wax after a wash as well.

The reason there is no consensus is because there is no right answer. The time intervals are so very specific to your car and the conditions it goes through. Additionally, many here are nuts who like to keep their car looking like it was just detailed as much as possible. And even further than that, everyone has their own opinion on how to make their car look the best.

Most people agree on general practices, from specific processes and how to use products, to what the car needs to look its best. There's always personal preference to which products to use. Wax is wax, right? Well no. Like Mercedes vs. BMW vs. Audi, etc. are all German cars.

Yes quite quickly you will learn there are some hard set rules and there are personal preferences. For washing it's generally excepted that if you've waited till someone can write "wash me" on a panel with their finger then you've waited too long.

Some people like to polish/wax every week/month others will let it ride according to their own regiment. What it depends largely on is how much of a "type A" personality you are (Meticulous and compulsive).

One thing to remember is that you cannot go on forever waxing your car without at some point stripping the old wax off first to prevent build-up. So the more you wax the more frequently you need to go through that process.

Wax or apply a sealant when your car doesnt bead water, or if you like doing it.

Wash when it is dirty.

Polish when it is swirled

Clay when there are bumps in the paint.

Is it outside 24/7 or is it garaged? How often is it driven? Daily driver or garage queen?

That is a major determinar on wash/wax frequency.

How often should one wash ones' hair? If you work on an oil rig or in an office, the answer would differ. :)
