How Much Lube while Claying?

I was reading some posts on the forum with regards to how much lube I should be using during my claying process....and I couldnt really tell how much I should be using..



I received the claymagic kit today from David..:woot: and it comes with the Claymagic bar and (2) 12oz bottles of Claymagic lube...some people seemed to be using the whole bottle of QD per claying....is this normal?



Also...I have read elsewhere that all you really need to use is 1/2 of the claybar and save the other half for another car or a second detail...is that true by you guys as well...or do you recommend using the whole bar on a given car in one detail?



Thanks guys...I just want to make sure I do this right the first time!

I used 3/4 of a bar of clay and 3/4 a bottle of lube on my wife's sentra. It had never been clayed and I dropped 1/4 of a piece of clay on the ground. I also was QEWing at the time which added a little more lubrication beyond that provided by clay magic.

I would suggest you cut the clay in third of quarters but some other recommend halves. You decide. Use lube as needed.

I would say cut the bar in half and use only enough lube so that the clay doesn't stop gliding across the surface. If it begins to dry and drag across, squirt some more lube. The problem that I have had is that if I use too much lube, the clay begins to get mushy and fall apart.
 
I cut the clay into small pieces and pitch them when they get contaminated (or dropped :o ). I use as much lube as I can without compromising the effectiveness of the clay. More lubrication = less chance of marring.
 
If your M3 havent been clayed for the past 10 years, you will probably need most of your clay bar. I clayed mine last week (the first time since I got the car last year) and I probably use 3/4 of the bar. I cut it in half, but I should have cut it in 3 or 4 parts. My first half get pretty dirty and its only usable on glass and rims now, but my second half is still usable.

For the lubricant, I wasnt shy with it since I dont wanted to marre the paint and I still have 1/4 bottle.
 
Whole bottle is a little much, I would say half bottle of clay lube per car if it is real gritty. I would quarter the bar, then toss the clay after use. 1 clay bar and two lubes= 4 clay jobs.
