how many times have you been pulled over?

i have had three speeding tickets in my driving career.

one time was when i was hauling sheep across iowa heading towards chicago. it was on interstate eighty. the truck i had had way to much power with a transmission and rear end gears to make it one of the fastest vehicles that i have ever driven. the speedometer only went to eighty so i really do not know how fast i was going and to be honest i cannot remember what the cop said as far as speed is concerned. but what i do remember is the state trooper saying to me " well i could arrest you for reckless driving. take you to jail and impound the vehicle." then he stopped and stared for a little while, lost in thought. he then asked me this question, "how long will the sheep be able to survive if they stayed on the truck without you moving?" i told him that in this weather of about 70 degrees and as full as the truck was they would probably last about two hours before some of them would start dying. by this time we were in the trooper car and he was doing warrant checks on me and i came back clear of any outstanding warrants. he started to write a ticket for speeding and as he was doing so he said,"I know what i can do with you and i know what i can do with your 18 wheeler but i sure as heck do not know what i would do with 400 head of dead sheep." i got a ticket for doing 65 in a 55 and left without saying another word other than yes sir. i got off lucky and have never done anything like that again.

I could probably give you guys a list a page long of what Ive been pulled over for. Typicly stupid stuff.. My Favorite 2 stories thought...
1. Before I had My Mustang I had a 4 door Focus... I was doing about 55 through the back streets of Upper saddle River New Jersey (If you don't know the area...its a pretty quiet town there is 1 store/gas station in the enitre town) Pretty quiet town for Northern new jersey) I came over this little hill to see a Cop heading right towards me ... My Radar detector didn't even Go off ... I pulled over to the side of the road and waited for the cop! ...He came up to the Car Laughing and shaking his head saying You know you were doing 55 in a 25... I told him I wasn't paying attention and he said Just for the fact that I pulled over with out him having to put his lights on He wasn't going to give me a ticket! I thanked him multiple times ..

2...While driving the Focus home from the bar one night...I did have a few drinks...probably a few too many but hind sight is always 20/20... I passed a cop and said Oh Sh!t... as the cop passed me .. i wasn't even speeding but You just know when your going to get pulled over... So in my quick thinking ...I needed to get gas..so I pulled in the gas station and I thought I lost him. Well I filled my tank a whole 2 gallons of gas... pulled out of the gas station and the cop was behind me again... He pulled me over ... asked me to do a few tests ... While my friend was laughing histericly in the passanger seat knowing that I shouldnl't have been driving. The cop told me to get back in the car ... he ran my tags .. gave me my paper work back and told me to get home...and not to let him catch me ever again.... I think I remember thanking God about 100 times that night!

From that day foward .. If Im driving ...Im not drinking!!! lesson well learned !!

I have never been pulled over. A few close calls, but I follow these three rules:

1. Know your local speed trap locations. When you learn to drive, move, or stay somewhere for a while where you would be driving, memorize every possible place where the cops could hide. It works quite well.

2. If you are going to speed, don't be first or last in line. Don't be going considerably faster than everyone else, and have someone on each side of you. This way, when the cop pulls someone over, it will be the guy in the back. Have someone in front of you so that you don't lose your "caravan".

3. Don't speed in places you aren't familiar with. If you've ever heard of New Rome, Ohio, you'll know what I'm saying.

In addition to cops that may hide differently, it's more of a hassle to deal with a non-local ticket.

Follow these tips, and you probably never get pulled over. I am not liable if you do these things and you still get caught. Good luck.

so far so good on the stories! there are some really good ones.. now lets see on average how fast do you drive over the speed limit.

I do about 10 over in town and 15-20 over in the country.

Lets keep the good stories coming

I got pulled over in Louisville Kentucky going as fast as a 78 Ford LTD(later totaled as it met a wall. that's another story) could go(well over 100). The cop made it a point to say I was going well over 70. He was happy with himself. I thought I was going to jail.Well it was after 2 in the morning and he made me follow him to the police station. To put a quick end to this I got a ticket with no court date and no fine amount on it. I swear the cop said I was exceeding the speed limit by so much that he didn't know what to do with me. He said his book only went up to 80mph. I told him to let me go then. He said he couldn't because he went to the trouble of hauling me/us to the station. My buddy who was with me(his car) started laughing. The cop gave us directions on how to get back on 75 south. My buddy told me to cool it. I said why as long as we are going faster than 70 we're cool and off we went flying down the expressway on our way to see a friend at Fort Campbell Kentucky. I have a few more but.... Oh yeah I think I've been pulled over 4/6 times. 1 was a bogus running a redlight and the rest was for speeding.

i got a quick question. do any of you guys have experience with those radar scrambling things? i remember one time i went to a shop and some guy was getting these scrambler things installed on the front and back of his nice 645i. how effective are they, and will cops still pull you over if theyre behind you?

Zesty do you mean those Laser Shields? I've heard they work somewhat but cost a fortune (tons of products :D), however I'm so not up to date on wats really good at all. Radar + Your eyes + brakes + brain = good solution. However just be smart! If not win the lottery and have a full time lawyer. :bigups

Speed Limits around NY and CT are pretty much all 55 on major highways. They say they're upping them to 65. The only reason they were down to 55 was due to the gas crisis in the 70's (I think that was the era).

Anyways, I'll do 70 on most of them and get passed by people doing easily 85+. On I-95, the starting point is 80 in the speed lane and that's about what I do.

No matter what, I am VERY concious of my speed and always play it safe when there are a lot of cars, people, distractions around.

Zesty: Put yourself in a cops position. The radar jammers send out false signals that read on the cops radar gun as "15, 210, 140, 12, etc". He OBVIOUSLY knows you have one. He'll most likely pull you over and give you a ticket for everything else in the book. I know a couple cops and they told me they could give a ticket to a brand new car rolled off the lot with no flaws. IMO, get a good radar detector (I have Valentine 1) and just play it safe on the roads.

Greg: Yes it is. I got it on a barter deal and haven't looked back. At first I relied on it all the time but NY cops don't use radar guns anymore. They use time between 2 pieces of land to estimate your speed. It sucks so I just keep it slow.

Now though, I just use it as a backup. I am very choosy about where I speed above the rest of the traffic. The key though, is to:

Flow with the rest of traffic

hmmm, what is a radar detector? that sounds pretty interesting.
:bigscream Its a device that conveniently detects when a radar gun is shooting or if radar waves are around (such as sliding doors). The Passport X50 8500 and Valentine 1 are pretty dang good! Prob the best you can get.

hmm, what are the range on these things? like, will i have time to actually slow down if a cop is on the side of the road shooting his radar gun? maybe i should buy this in private given that my parents wont be too happy to hear that im getting this kinda tihng :eek. give me some support norah!!!! i need a good arguement to present to my parents on why i need this radar gun!

Zesty its a radar GUN! :lol Dude this works when the radar gun of the Police is ON! It won't make you invisible. It costs alot for a quality one, esp the ones I mentioned. Check em out:

Sorry, Zesty - I'm with your folks on this one :nono
Speed limits were put in place for a reason - safety - your own & other people's!!! :eek
You don't need something to distract you when driving, which it will, when it goes off. :nono I have one, and don't use it for that reason.
You'll be much better off to become a defensive driver who is aware of EVERYTHING around him (including radar traps ;))

You're right. I flow with traffic no matter what and choose the slow lane in town/city or heavily populated areas. It's really not worth ruining my car in an accident or hurting myself/someone else. Not to mention, getting a ticket. The only place I open it up is on major highways and still then I am flowing with the traffic...NEVER be the head car, cops will cherry pick you out. If someone is doing 80 in a 55, I'll be a "2 second count" behind them :).

I've been pulled over my fair share of times. When I had my built up Mustang I got hit several times. Nothing has ever been put on my record though. That is the benefit of a paralegal education. ;) I've got a ticket for 125 in a 55 framed on my wall next to a picture of my Mustang. That was my finest moment in court. Kind of a stressful evening the night of the ticket, but it was sure fun getting out of it. ;) I haven't been pulled over nearly as many times in the Integra. Maybe once a year, but still nothing is on the record. The secret to keeping a clean record is keeping a clean record. I never argue with the cop writing out the ticket. Save that for another time. I figure I deserve to get pulled over once in awhile just because of all the times I speed and don't get caught. Kharma goes around and comes around. You just gotta take it when it comes around.
