How many times can I polish before I eat clear coat away?

Ok, I always use a Pc to do my work so I am not talking about a highspeed here. I got my car back from the body shop about 5 months ago and it has been sitting in storage until this week. Tonight I went to get the swirls out that the body shop left from compounding and I can not seem to get them out. I have gone over it SEVERAL times with a few swirl removing products and there are still A LOt of swirls left. I just want to make sure, before I go further, if I should be alright on clear coat depth.

Sounds like the body shop tried to fix your paint and went a little to heavy with the rotary.



Check to make sure they are swirls, not sanding marks in the paint itself rather than the clear coat.



I would bring the car back if it is that bad and tell them you dont feel comfortable wet sanding or buffing with a rotary and compound to fix their mistakes.



If they arnt that bad you can use a Porter Cable and a compound, it's not as aggresive as it sound because of the Porter Cable. It'll at least give you an idea if the defects are really that bad.



Just to give you an idea, I used about 3 applications of a polish with the Porter Cable just about every single weekend like clock work for an spring, summer, fall thinking I was waxing the paint and I never had trouble with the clear failing.
 
Yeah, if you're using SMR-type products by PC you're not taking off much clear. Proabably not ENOUGH, by the sound of it.
 
Best advice I can offer is focus on one panel at a time. If you think of how long it takes to detail each panel and how much you need to detail it will never come out right.



Ignore how much works lies ahead of you....if you can :)
 
If you paid a quality shop to do the work, then make them 'make it right'.



Sometimes, you get what you pay for...
