How durable are PC's?

I am about to buy a used one on ebay, and it looks pretty used. Do they last many years? Do certain parts wear out in them, like bearings? I figure fo the price, I can't go wrong. They says it works fine, but no accessories come with it.

Supposedly there is a maintence schedule, but I haven't heard of many people ever taking them in for service. (I haven't)

Someone brought up a good point the other day on one of my questions. If the PC has been used for other things like sanding, they'd be concerned about dust & debris getting on the housing and then dislodging on your paint and messing everything up.

I was thinking the same thing. I'll clean it pretty well. This seller has many PC's for sale, but looks like he is debadging them. I don't know why, but I'll give it a shot.

I've had to have one rebuilt and a second one (or maybe it's the same one, I can't tell 'em apart any more) is starting to make rattling-bearings noises.

Mike Phillips says Meguiar's has a pile of them that've been replaced under warranty.

But the PC rebuilds are cheap, so cheap I don't even remember what it cost. And it's not like they're cheaply built junk or anything like that.

FWIW, in my experience the Cyclo is incomparably more durable. My older one only needed a light going over (they said it didn't really *need* anything) after almost 20 years, some of those in a commercial setting.

I use 2 pc 7336's at a woodshop I work at and they go through hell and get all kinds of dust and everything in them and they've never ever failed us, one of them is at least 4 years old too and the other is like 1 or 2.

Also, about the dust and debri inside the machine: I've been using are sanding PC's for polishing for some time now with no problems, I just use compressed air and blow the hell out of them before leaving the shop, they will be fine.

After using these things for soo long I think the biggest weak point is the shaft. The only problem we have with our is from people dropping them and bending the shaft a little bit. You cannot see them bent but when you start using them it jumps around a little bit, that's the only problem.

I bought my PC in March of 1995 and use it a lot. I've detailed an average of 2-3 cars a week over nearly 10 years and it still works like new. So yes, it is pretty durable. That said, I'd not buy a used one unless I new the source.

Thanks for the replies.

As it turns out, I did not win the bidding. I was out bid on two different auctions from the same guy. They went for about 50$ each. I am guessing they are being liquidated from a contracting company or something. They had the labels removed so PC would not warranty them. seemed fishy.

For only saving $50, I'd just buy a brand new one that comes with warranty.

What's a good price for a PC?

Amazon has the 7424 for $114

Lowes has the 7336 for $99 + MA sales tax 5% + gas to drive there, I don't have one nearby. They don't seem to ship them from lowes.com. I know they just had a sale, but was too busy to drive to MA to get one.

Thanks,

Steve

coastaltools.com has the PC with 6" BP, 5" and 6" CW for $126.50 shipped. I think its one of the best prices unless you go through Lowes. Since they are located on the east coast, I got it within 2-3 days :xyxthumbs

So that was you that outbid me today. Look at the bidding history and you will see me in there. I figured if I could have picked it up for $50, cool. But I did not and ended up going to Lowes and picking up a 7336 for $99. I orded the Sonus Pad kit and once I receive that, well then everything within arms reach of me is getting polished!:D

Too funny!!!

Yea I was only going to about $50. I got outbid in the last 5 seconds, frustrating, but who cares.

Better off with a new one anyway.
