How do you keep your polisher clean?

Good morning everyone!

I was just cleaning up the shop, and I realized I have been in a constant battle with my polishing equipment.

I have two Makita 9227C polishers.

I first started out using just one polisher for all three buffing stages. I later found it was far to difficult to clean off the compound after every stage.

Now I use one for hard and medium stages, and the other for fine polishing.

But the polisher I use for cutting still stacks on compound and sucks wool fiber into the motor. I am forced to strip it down and re protect it almost every week.

Does anybody have a method they use to keep their rotary tools clean, without frequent disassembely?

I'm going to try placing a K&N air filter section behind the vents. It should really protect the interior... I'm just tired of cleaning wool & compound out of the motor.

I decided to strip down my worst polisher. It pretty much got a full renovation. All parts disassembeled, degreased, regreased, and protected.

To keep the wool from getting back into the motor I cut thin strips of Yellow Foam, and placed them in the handle behind the vents. The yellow foam allows massive airflow, while blocking out all fibers & large debris.

Hmmm... I wonder if you could wrap some of that black air conditioner filter material around the body of the machine over the slots? Just don't let it fill up too much. I used that to keep dust from collecting inside some audio equipment. It works. :nixweiss

nice looks clean man! I hate my Makita LoL. This is the 3rd time that i am having power wire issues with it. I just fixed the power wire a couple months ago and now its acting up again.

I'm beginning to think that it's the Makita Bag they give you that smashes the power cord and kinks it up.
