How do you guys dress engines?

I just bought some CD2 Engine Detailer Spray. I've been scouring all my local auto parts stores looking for it and I finally found some. From what I've read, it's great stuff but I haven't tried it yet. Also, I believe it's some sort of acrylic formula not a silicone spray.

Then you risk overspray on the fenders, ect....
At the dealership I work at, I was told to use clear......not the best way, I could think of a million ways better. After a while, the paint would flake/chip off. If the plastic was not cleaned well, for instance, engine detailed before with a silicon based product, then the paint would fish eye, thus causing more problems. IMHO, too much at risk for something so simple.

So, now I use a no name dressing at work.....just spray down the engine with it. Works wonders, though I wouldn't use it on my personal vehicles.

I used to use clear paint on paying full details at the ford dealership i worked at. I still do it from time to time on high dollar cars or hotrods. There is no risks if you do it right. Tape off the fenders and such with newspaper and you will get no overspray.

I do agree that it does look good when done right. But to me, it's not worth the hassle to mask everything just for that purpose. Too much time for me. I dunno, everyone likes different things, not bustin anyones balls or anything.... :boxing:

CD2 is a good product, but tricky. I would try it out on a 'test bay' (if possible) before using it. It can be a PITA.

What do you mean? Could you give me more detail on some of the problems you've had with CD2? Thanks.

Now, the general concencus seems to be spraying degreaser, and hosing off.

Anything I should cover with a plastic bag, to protect some non-water friendly devices?

I would have a brush handy for scrubbing soiled areas. I would cover up the alternator, distributor, and air intake. If it's a newer car the control module as well. If you do a halfway decent job covering up and are only using a garden hose then I think you'll be safe.

Also, I recently tried some CD2 engine dressing and I thought it was great. Made the engine bay look like new. You can spray it on everything metal, hoses, plastic, etc. Leaves behind a nice low gloss look.
