How do you guys dress engines?

Just curious as to how you guys dress plastic and rubber engine pieces/components. Do you wipe whatever you can get your hands on with the dressing or do you simply spray the pieces so that they're coated with the dressing? Especially the elaborate or hard to reach pieces. As well, what products have you found work best for each method. Thanks. ;)

I usually use an aerosol type dressing like In-and-Out or CD2 dressing. I find that these types of dressings were designed for engines so they are very good at holding their shine for a while. In addition they are very easy to apply because you just spray them on, close your hood, and run your car for about a minute. You can get the CD2 at Autozone for about $5.

The engine is where i start my details. I spray degreaser over the motor, under the hood, etc. Spray it all down with my pressure washer then while the motor is still wet. I get my water based dressing mix it 1 to 1 in a spray bottle. And go to town with it. i make sure i get every little spot from top to bottom. Then i go to washing the outside.

Well, I just did a detail on my engine compartment today. Just got done actually and it turned out great. I broke my camera so I wont have any pics of anything for a couple weeks atleast so... I used simple green diluted because the engine was already pretty clean to begin with from when I degreased it with Gunk a couple months ago. I used some tooth brushes, cuple rags, and CD-2 Detailer to dress things up. I have to say I really love the look the CD-2 Detailer gave the engine. I sprayed everything. It's sitting on there right now and I will wipe down in about 20 minutes to smooth things out cause it does run a little and leave streaks so I will give it a wipe down with a vroom m/f towel to smooth things out. I also used Flitz for the first time today. Only had the polish and a regular house rag to use so I didn't get the best results I probable could have. I used it on the metal caps under the hood and it made things look alot better. I also used S&W on the painted surfaces under the hood.

I just spray it on and let it soak for a while till I get done washing and drying, then wipe off any excess dressing.

Cool, thanks for the info. I'll use the Aspire as a test dummy. I wanted to try diluted Natural Look, but I can't bring myself to use that on the Aspire. Maybe once the Rex gets a bit more dirty. :jump

I use CD2 or Trim Shine. I just did my engine Friday, sprayed the degreaser, then I blow dry the water off with the shop vac, dress and close the hood. After I'm done with the wash, I usually go back and touch a bit.

Does everyone spray the plastic/rubber and metal parts under the hood with dressing or just the plastic/rubber parts?

Fat chance,
Did you remove the engine cover when you cleaned? I like how you painted the cover that reaaly dresses up the engine compartment.

Eric

I just spray the dressing over everything, it makes it all shiney, even the metals in there. If I have a bunch of time I'll wipe it all down to even out the coat.

For me I use Meg APC 10:1 and let saok for few second, Then you need a brush to clean out the grime and other crap....after that I carefully hose it down. Then I dress it with Meg Hyper Dress 3:1.
Here's an engine I detaill over the weekend.

The cover pops right off. I spray down the motor with degreaser, then rinse, dry and dress. I clean the cover seperate then pop it back on.

Depends on the weather. In the summer time Shorts T-Shirt and a nice pair of sandles. In the Winter Usually a Down coat, and Some snow pants maybe!

Sorry for the hijack.

I use a degreaser mixed 10:1 with water. let it dry a bit & spray WD40. So far it seems to work pretty good. (I'm hoping the pics come out)

It's a brand owned by turtle wax (probably their best line) that makes engine degreaser and dressing along with any consumer fuel and/or oil additive you could dream up. The detailing part of the brand is very good, the additives aren't anything to write home about (no additives ever are).
