How do you deal with this....inconsiderate people and door dings?

Ahhh another ding revenge thread...it HAS to come up every now and then.

I have never exacted revenge on someone's car...though I really don't have any dings so...I have left notes though.

I'm sorry but there is NOTHING WRONG with being upset over hundreds of dollars of damage to a car that you maintain. Just because others choose to treat their $20,000+ posessions like garbage doesn't mean I ahve to too. There is absolutely no respect in our society today. People are careless and walk around like their standards are the only ones everyone else should follow.

I have told people I would beat the f*@& out of them if they ever parked next to me again when I was at college. Luckily no one took revenge for that. It was a dumb thing but sometimes you have to do it to show people you aren't screwing around when it comes to respecting your expensive property.

Avoidance is the ONLY way to go though. I park incredibly far away and will search for spots for as long as it takes. I walk 10-15 minutes a day just so I can park in a garage where my car is totally protected. If I parked in the lot at work or the garage nearby I would be worrying all the time. The other key is PARALELL PARKING. License plate frames are really cheap, and repainting/replacing bumper covers seems to happen to em from time to time anyway. Still though...I have driven to places only to go somehwere else or just go home because I couldn't find a spot that was acceptable. It's a level, I know, but I don't have the money to be fixing dings all the time.

I have never damaged someone's car for revenge, but I would under the right circumstances...

Endus,

I couldn't have said it any better and I do exactly the same thing as you. Glad to know I'm in company :xyxthumbs

I should have very strong leg muscles from all the walking I do after parking :) For the most part its cheap peace of mind ,not to mention good exercise.

It appears there are high number of dis-respecting people in Mass. Sometimes it's not worth going to court, lawyers, etc over a $300.00 dent made by some inconsiderate A__hole.

Revenge can be a good thing, if done carefully.

Cutting the valve stems seems to be the quickest, non-attention getter idea.

Good luck

SuperBuick-I have customers who will whip out their checkbook to pay me and begin to place it on my hood to write it out. I always ask them not to do that as it can scratch my paint. Not only does it keep my car from getting scratched, but it educates them so they don't do the same with their own cars.

I drive a my Ford wagon ( autopian detailed) everyday and leave the prized vehicles safe in my garages..

Worth the investment.....Great reliever and peace of mind while at work.

Me too. That's what it's come to. I could not bring myself to driving one of the good cars to work for them to sit day after day getting banged up by the careless a-holes.

You should see the dings on my daily driver. For someone to make the statement that it is strictly "accidental" is shear stupidity. It's carelessness and beyond. There's nothing accidental about it.

Tom, I lived in Boston for over 40 years. Great city. Probably one of the best in the world. But driving and parking there can be a pure nightmare for anyone that cares about their vehicles.

Example: bumper car parallel parking. Placing a vehicle in a parking space that is only 6" longer than the vehicle. When do you know your are as far back or forward as you can go.... bump into the vehicle in back or front! :shocked

My last daily driver in Boston.... 1985 Jeep J10 3 ton Full-size Pick-up!!!

Go PATS!!!!! :D

When I pulled up to the dealership to take delivery of my Lexus there was a salesman leaning against it, when he saw me he laughed and polished it.........with his tie.

I thought I'd die  no damage though, I dont see how...

I HATE door dings and over the years I have become adept at avoiding them (knock on wood). Couple of tips (some are repeats I know)

1. Get there a little early and take the time to drive around until you find a good spot. Don't be afraid to take a walk...

2. Paralell spots. If you can find a paralell spot where nobody can back into the space in front of you and you can leave plenty of space for the guy behind you, thats a safe way to go.

3. Look careless, not like you care. Dont park way the hell out alone. If its one of those spaces with a dead area to one side, and a space to the other, park in just a little crooked and leave the wheels cut all the way to one side to make it look like you just pulled in quickly.

4. As was said, avoid minivans. Not only are children around, but things are loaded in and out and you dont want them resting anything on, or ramming anything into your car.

5. Avoid pickups for the same reason, people are more likely to load things.

6. Try and park on the passenger side of a car, less likely to have an occupant there.

7. Save the clean car part of the week for the weekend. If you commute and park in a tight lot or garage, let that happen when the car is already dirty. A shiny car stands out.

8. Dont park on the basis of what is parked beside you. "Oh, its a Lexus and a Jaguar, I'm safe" you come out and its a Pinto and a 1978 Ford pickup in primerrust metallic. Park in a good space, not around good cars.

9. Lastly, don't anger the parking gods. What goes around comes around. If you vandalize someone's property, then someone will vandalize yours, and in a worse and less repairable way than a door ding. Most door dings can be 100% fixed with PDR for $60. Keying scraping and kicking are there forever. If you see somebody bump into or damage a car in any way, leave the licence plate of the car for the owner. Remember, what goes around comes around. People generally don't damage your car on purpose, they just dont know any better. You just have to avoid those that dont look like they care.
