How do you apply wax

I just got a D.A. machine few months ago and I am not going back to hand waxing a whole car again. Hand are for the very tight spots machine does the rest. Makes a nice thin even coat that comes off way easier by hand I am always using to much product.

Hand apply all wax's but must say ive been mega impressed with the r222/p21s wax applicators rather than the autofinesse wax mate used previous, so the conversion's been done and the r222 applicators are better working spreading thiner and even coat's.

Out of curiosity, when applying by hand do you guys apply in circular motions or just back and forth?

Go in straight lines and ALWAYS start in the center of whatever section you are applying to. Working outwards will help you avoid getting wax in the cracks - And ALWAYS apply THIN!

This is a great thread!!

I do straight lines as well. Usually a cross-hatch pattern when I wax by hand with BFMS. For Coll 845 and BFWD, I use the GG6 and get in the tight spots by hand with a foam applicator.

With my hands! Wearing nothing but black socks, teal leopard speedo's and a Panda skull cap!

But, really...I just use a foam applicator pad to apply and buff off with a finishing foam pad with my DA.

It doesn't really matter if you apply wax in lines, circulars, squares, or triangles. All that matters is that your surface is surgically clean, your applicator is surgically clean, and your wax isn't contaminated with dirt.

If you have those 3 factors down, apply as you like. I usually alternate with strait lines and circles. Circles seem like you can go farther with less wax...but strait lines are quicker. I always clean my applicator with a pad brush after every few panels, just in case any junk could have gotten in it.

IME applying paste wax with a DA seems to waste a lot of wax, because the pad is much bigger and will hold onto more wax just due to the volume of foam. Since you will likely have to use a hand pad for tighter areas - that means when your done you will now have 2 pads to clean: applicator pad & DA foam pad. And...sometimes getting wax out of a 5.5" pad isn't fun.

Ive always waxed in straight line but its always applied up and down and side to side only on bonnet and rear of the car, I always had the thought that it helped with light reflect on the bodywork when applied this way!
