How Do I Know If I am Using Too Much Polish? (pics)

Hard to say really. I would have to be there and try a few different things.

Im confused as to what the problem really is here, is he getting micro-marring? I cant tell from the pics.

Or is he having trouble removing the heavier marring?

Are the pads LC yellow and orange? I dont use those pads, what is the cut of those 2?

I cant get rid of the swirls, those pics are before polishing. The first pic is after 2 passes with yellow and OC. yellow is a aggressive cutting pad orange is still cutting but not as harsh. I know i was not putting swirls back inot the paint because the side panels came out great it was just the roof and trunk i am having the probem with.

sounds to me like you may be right with using too much polish. I only put 5-6 small blobs on the pad, maybe a little bigger than a pea size. I think it caked up too much when I used more when I first started.

You are using too much polish. I usually start with a ring around the outside of the pad and then when the pad gets primed I reduce the amount I add to a few blobs around the outside of the pad.

Also, did you try following up with a finishing polish like OP? It might be buffer haze as others have suggested. It could be your technique though. How big of an area do you work? How fast do you move your arm? What speed is the machine on? How long do you work the polish?

As a beginner I would, based on what you say, think that it is not quantity of polish you are using because otherwise you would be having problems on side panels too. Unless paint processes end up resulting in softer paint on vertical panels than on horizontal or if this car had horizontal panels repainted with something harder than was on side panels. If it was repaint could swirls be under the clear?
