How Do I Clean The Headlight Lens?

crobinso

The Grand Marquis Man
I hate to see older cars with the molded headlight lenses looking all clouded, dull and dirty. My 2004 Grand Marquis has the molded lenses. They are clear and shiny. How do I keep them that way?

Charles

Polish and wax regularly. A mild SMR followed by a sealant (not wax-headlights get hot, hot kills wax...just like on rims)

good question i was wondering the same thing and looking into some, meguires plastic cleaners and polishes. at first i though the headlight i was working on were glass, i then tapped them with a nickel and there plastic.

has anyone tried 10, 17,18, pastx? if so, please post.

I use mild polishes on headlights and other clear exterior plastics (e.g. bug guards, window vent visors, etc.). Poorboy's Pro Polish and Clearkote's Vanilla Moose are my current products of choice.

I've used Poorboys SSR's on headlights before, which worked pretty well. However I think my favorite way to shine em up is to use a very fine sandpaper (1000-2000 grit) and wetsand them. Yes, they will look cloudy after you wetsand. But when you polish them up (whichever polish you like I suppose) they look brand spankin' new!

I used the PC and Menzerna Final Polish on them to polish them and then coated them with 303 protectant.

Ditto on the Plexus if they're already in showroom shape.

For slightly hazy lenses, Plastix.

For toasted light, wetsanding.

Thanks, guys, for all of the great tips. Y'all've made me very happy. I will be able to keep my car looking showroom new for many years.

Grateful,
Charles

Yep, I have plastX. Works fairly well with PC and 4 " pad, cleared some badly discolored lenses with it just last week. Also, check out using finishing polishes, they seem to get the job done too :)
