the depth is incredible on the red car!!!

A really really good and expensive paint job

Edit: notice that there is no orange peel on either car. Those cars were setup just for the shows. I bet that they were hand painted, wetsanded, loaded up with a good ammount of clear, then polished to perfection and topped with a really good glaze

lol.. thats what i was thinking.. that maybe the individual car companies put more time into the paint because its showing off their own car.. but what if they didnt... id pay an arm and a leg to get my hands on that wax

not really

One word and only one word, ok two. Carnuba wax. After of couarse the polishing, glazing, or what have you. A 10, 000 dollar paint job helps.

i used a carnauba on my friends red rx-8 and it didnt look that good... i used p21s the first time, and another time i used nattys

Rarely can you spot orange peel from as far away as the pictures were taken on half decent finishes. I can look at my car from 10 feet and the finish looks perfect...move to 2-3 feet staring at an angle and the orange peel jumps out.

Agreed though that manufacturers will take extra care for show cars.

Prep is always the key to great depth.

I have spoke to my body shop in great length about getting that deep shine. He said without hesitation "3-Stage Paint Job". Base Coat, Color Coat, Clear Coat....That's how you get extraordinary depth.

My car from Acura is 3-stage red as are most Ford colors. I'm sure there are MANY others out there but I know that red is a common one where it's 3 stages.

I'm not sure where you took those pics but when I went to the NYC International Auto Show last year...ABSOLUTELY every car there had swirls on it. I tried to strike up a conversation with the "detailers" and they had no idea what they were using on the car (in spray bottle), had dirty MFs, and were using some kinda duster that looked like a ferret.

lol.. dusters that looked like ferrets.. thats some funny s***.

thats the same car show where i took these pictures from. are u going this year?

Yikes Sean, I recall seeing that "ferret" duster in NY one time and I think Philly too :scared

I see them at the Dallas auto show too. Ferret dusters and swirls on brand new Ferraris. I even saw swirls in a few Little John Buterra (spelling?) cars at the Peterson Automotive Museum. In fact, Bob (Aurora40), Bob (rjstaff), and Jim (Jimmy Buffits) and I spent a good portion of the time we were there picking apart the finish on the cars! Great paint jobs, horrible detailing. Sad really....

Back on topic. Like the others said, those cars have phenomenal paint jobs. Several base coat layers, each one seperately wet sanded glass smooth and several layers of clear, also wet sanded glass smooth. Once they are buffed out, they don't even need wax to look good.

Don't know about the red car, but the Porsche GT in the bottom photo is brand new and lists for $440,000. Of course you and I would pay way over list ( if we could get on the list to purchase one ). Lots of carbon fiber panels. I don't know if that makes the finish any different or not.

At the last LA Auto show, one of the manufacuturer reps told me that they mostly QD their cars, too many people are getting in and out of them....He said that most consumers don't really notice the swirls and are more interested in sitting inside of the cars.

I basically left it at that, and moved on.

lol.. i didnt really notice the swirls @ the nyc car show, but then again i wasnt paying attention. i'll take a look this time though, and get some close ups:D

You can get your finish to level close to that.

1. Remove all the orange peel.

2. Do an excellent job polishing.

3. Top off with a highly reflective FSP.

4. Park under low light conditions with those halogens lights that are at arena's :)

I am betting it is just the camera tricking you. That looks to be The International Autoshow. For that the companies pull cars from the local dealer to use. Most companies won't trailer cars around for the shows unless it is a concept.

Yeah, pull most any "showcar" into the right lighting and you'll find it looks awful by our standards. Plus, glazes and fillers can do a lot on a temporary basis.

The ones with special paintjobs are a different story, but consider how easy it is to mar *any* paint, or, conversely, how hard it is to *not* mar it.

And honestly, the only really good factory paintjobs I've seen are on Bentleys. You can wetsand/etc. the others, but I too doubt they bother for shows where nobody would appreciate it. I once bought a Porsche that had been displayed at an autoshow, and its paint sure wasn't anything special, still took a lot of work before I could stand it.
