Homemade panel wipe formula

This caught my eye.
More than just water and IPA, has an added surfactant.

This is in milliliters, so here are the conversions to ounces.

670 ml. Or 22.65 ozs. of DI water
300 ml. Or. 10.14 ozs. of 99% IPA
20 - 25 ml. Or .67 - .84 ozs. of SLES . (sodium lauryl ether sulphate)
1/2 ml. Or .0169 ozs. of liquid Dye

I did find the SLES & liquid soap making Dye at AMZ.

The only thing is the 99% IPA.
I can find 70% IPA, which adds more water to the mix.??
(Most likely be rounding these amounts off any way)

I think they may have meant 91%. I don`t ever remember seeing 99%.

The 99% would be a technical grade that you would get industrially or from a lab supply company, not drugstore or supermarket. I`ve actually never seen it characterized as anything less than 100% in that context, but that was obviously a "foreign" recipe since it was in ml; maybe in Europe they refer to it as 99%.

At work we order 99.9% isoproponal, but we get by the 55 gal drum.

We don`t dilute with anything for a quik panel wipe, or sticker glue removal.

DONT TRY THIS AT HOME, having said that, we work on paint straight from the factory

and paint applied in house, so it is of a known quality, no guess work.

A foaming surfactant? I`d be concerned about residues although maybe the concentration is low enough to not matter. I`d just pick up a solvent-based automotive panel wipe if I wanted simple and inexpensive.

This is too much work for too little gain imho. I use 91 percent ipa 50/50 with di water and I’m no worse for the wear. Going to give rustoleum or dupilcolor a try next. Thanks for that other video :)

If it works for you. Have fun. I don’t want to mix so many items.

why use dye?

I think.. to see the liquid. Most likely drop that unnecessary step.

What I`m after is something not grabbing the paint on my Chevy hood, which has a plastic front end.
If I wipe that area I have to be very gentle w/Eagles or end up redoing the whole front.
This may give me some control over my chemical characteristics by adding lubricity through the surfactant amount.
Enabling me to more thoroughly clean those type of areas.

Yea.. I will be trying this formula, without the dye.
If it does work on the touchy areas, I`ll mix up a big batch and give it`s own spout container at roughly 12$ a Gal.

Rustoleum wax & tar remover. Gotta try it !! at roughly 28$ a Gal.

Plus I did order 16ozs. of WG paint prep. for good measure. Never tried it though. at roughly 80$$$ a Gal.

Thanks for reading

The SLES was for so the ipa don`t evaporate so fast and get to break down the polishing oils a longer time. Then it`s has a cleaning function and gets you a little lubrication.

Have you looked in an electronic store that sells motherboards and PCB multi circuit boards. They often uses 99% ipa to clean those. So if lucky you can find them there.

I have been using John`s formula for a while now. Instead of SLES i use small amount of simple green degreaser or even few drops of dish washing detergent.
If however SLES was available was available is small economical qty in my country (Australia) i would use it.
I found that the home made ipa works ok however i have also found that products like CP Erazer use slightly different alcohol (or a mixture of ipa plus another) and tend to work better as a final wipe. It comes down to volume and cost, here ipa is expensive, so is Erazer so home remedy is good for cheap everyday use.

Enjoy your mixing..

Cheers
