Zoran, according to former classmates or friends who live in the States, life is generally cheaper there.

Bence, I live in the States, I am not from Hungary, but not far from it either. I don't feel that life is cheaper here. Sure, gas costs more in Europe but then people don't make as much mileage and actually have a public transportation. McDonald's costs more there but one can not compare McDonald's in States to one in Europe. Let's talk about true costs of living like basic neccessities, health care, rent/mortgage, the real stuff you can not be without. One can live without Aston Martin. Not to mention that Aston Martin is as much of a dream to average person here as it is there, if he is using it as a benchmark he is out of touch with reality of average persons to start with. Did he compare taxes here with taxes there? It all adds up.

If Hungary is sometimes not a funny place to live that can be too said about States by people at downtown and South Central L.A. Which one is less funny I don't know but I know there is less homeless people and people without health care (practically none) where I am from than it is in States.

Health care is getting more and more privatized, so we are not far from the unbelievable. We have to pay almost 2 bucks just for visiting a doctor - no matter if we have an actual problem or not. If you just go for a prescription, you have to pay.

We have huge taxes too. Just a quick example: we have a so-called registration tax for imported vehicles. A friend imported a pretty heavily damaged Acura 3.2 CL Type S. The car cost him with shipping and all the necessary body & paint jobs about US$ 12.000, yet the registration tax would have cost him more than 23.000. Needless to say that he let his car registrated in Slovakia where the exact same purpose tax cost him US$770 - after Slovakia has doubled this tax a year before.

So the differences are extraordinary now. Our family of 3 has to pay around US$ 1300 fix costs a month (heating, water, etc.) and besides we have to face a kind of bureaucracy that is unimaginable in the "modern" world.

I don't know when did you leave your former Yugo home or how often do you travel home, but the changes were/are pretty significant. I loved being in Yugoslavia in the early 80s. The Adria was beautiful and we spent quite a lot of time in Pula, Lovran and in Dubrovnik. But the prices are much higher there too. Obviously I don't know how expensive everyday life is there, I know only our own situation.

just ordered the makita... deciding factor... I saw that guy Paul (expesive detail guy in UK) using the makita, so I said why not haha... I really couldn't make a solid decision, and will probably be getting a hitachi in the summer as well... thanks for all the responses guys
