Hi-Temp Extreme Cut... was it a good choice?

Super Shine,

Thanks for the response.

Irene at TOL and the web site description say they will work with PC, but many comments on this board imply they are "intended for rotary".

I was wondering if anybody has any personal experience, good or bad, with the Hi-Temp levelers and PC.

P.S. where in VA are you located? I lived just south of Richmond for 8 years.

i was in richmond for a few years now for the time being in in mecklenburg county but on the move to nashville within a few months.

a rep at hi temp that i spoke to told me a pc doesnt produce the heat needed for the maximum performance of the product so say for instance you wanted to remove a deep but removable surface scratch i dont think you should reach for your ec and yellow lc pad as the product itself is a water based formula that required the heating action of a rotary to fully break down.

not sure how much truth to that there is but i wouldnt know for sure. if youre sanding anything dont hesitate to bust out the rotary and 357. compared to many compounds it tends to leave very little light polishing required. in which case give thier low cut a whirl, easy to work with as you basically polish until the products gone. their low cut is also great on exterior plastics as well.

how does EC compare to OHC?

I know this isn't very technical or anything, but I have both of them...Via cyclo - EC is by far better in my opinion; I dont think my OHC will be getting much use :( and it's brand new

For some reason I have always had trouble going from a compound or even polish for that matter to an almost LSP ready finish, sometimes I would have to do 3 polishing steps to get rid of the marring/haze. EC is the first compound I can use and almost go to LSP with. I just quick hit it with some Blackfire Finishing Polish and I'm all set. It truly is a time/life saver :)

I don't understand what is up. Can I not use EC by PC? Here's how it happened today... recently we used DACP on an orange 4" pad on a WRX.... took out EVERYTHING. EVERYTHING. Today I used DACP on a 6.5" Orange pad on my gma's dark red grand am... it had less swirls than the WRX... yet the DACP hardly made a dent. I would assume just a harder clear than the WRX. Anyway... the only things I have stronger than DACP are EC and 3M FCRC (been trying to stop using this because of the silica). I pull out the EC, 4" orange pad... make some passes til it starts to go clear... NO VISIBLE DIFFERENCE AT ALL. Wth... I NEED something stronger than DACP!

Hey Josh... if you can't help me figure out this EC... and you think you could use some... maybe we could work out some sort of trade - my EC for your OHC? I've used about 2 nickel sizes of EC.

From my other thread ... Hi-Temp told me only Light Cut and Medium Cut by PC, others by rotary ...

After asking this question ten different ways in ten different threads (possibly to the annoyance of some :nixweiss ), I finally called Hi-Temp and asked them directly about their line of levelers. Here is what I was told:

HT-61 Light Cut and HT-300 Medium Cut are probably OK with a Dual Action polisher as they are solvent based. The solvents will help to soften the clear coat so that the swirls can be removed with the friction that a PC develops.

HT-357 Heavy Cut, HT-420 Extreme Cut, and HT-440 Extreme Cut Plus are water based and are therefore primarily intended for the rotary. Since they don't contain solvents, the heat generated by the rotary is needed to cut the clear coat.

Just wanted to share as maybe others had the same question. . . :secret

Definitely true. I run into a repainted Toyota Yaris with very hard clear. Even with EC, I had to spin the rotary up to 2200 to achieve the necessary results. Man, the panels were HOT, but I could put on a light filling LSP if I wanted to.

You need a rotary!!

You are essentially bringing a knife to a gun fight. :D IMO, sometimes you just need a rotary.

In comparison to #84 or #85, it will cut like #85, but finish better than #83. You definitely cannot use the #84/#85 via PC

I DO need a rotary. Who'd think that just a couple months into detailing I'd already be looking into a rotary. How afraid should I be? Is there somewhere I can read alot about technique? How risky are they REALLY?

Is it actually difficult to where you easily cause damage... or is it more an issue of ignorant users damaging paint?

EDIT: And btw.. we have an entire scrap CAR... chris's old Mazda 626. Doesn't run anymore... top panels completely oxidized and the rest not great either.

Hey Drew, if you feel like the EC isn't of any use anymore to you I will do the straight up trade...what size EC do you have? I used about 2 drops out of mine as well when testing it. Just shoot me a PM and we'll work something out! Thanks!

I'm gonna see if I can catch a ride on the band wagon and give the EC Plus a try tomorrow (with rotary). I'm very optimistic. I love my PG for it's ability to cut and yet finish down amazingly well, but dust and cost leaves the door open for improvement.

Maybe HT-3 Heavy Cut Compound would work better via PC (for those that must)...since it's solvent based, I've heard it doesn't need the heat that a rotary generates. But I'm with others that have posted here...I really don't like the results of mixing Heavy compounds with a DA.

Ryan, Did you get to try out the EC plus?

I see that Sean lays down a line of each when polishing, does anybody mix both of them in a small sample bottle?
