Here's an unusual vehicle request

I got an email tonight requesting a quote on a 1988 Buick LeSabre (grey). I've seen the car before, and it's dull, but not too bad. The car is owned by my friend's parents, so I quoted $60 for the exterior (wash/clay/SSR2.5/AIO/UPP).

I'm guessing that it would be clearcoated...does anyone know if the late 80s Buicks were clearcoated? I realize that I could check by polishing a spot on the car to look for transfer, but I am just curious if anyone can tell me now.

I'm very curious to see how well a little detailing can transform the 17yr old paint.

My '87 Buick Grand National and '87 Buick Turbo T are not clear coated. Neither are my 91' GMC Syclone nor '92 GMC Typhoon. Never actually checked the '89 Pontiac Turbo Trans Am. At any rate, its a safe bet that car is base coat only. ;)

80's model GMs had a serious paint checking problem (what looks like dull paint on the hood, roof and trunk lid is actually micro-cracked. If that is the case, don't even bother because nothing short of a repaint will fix it.

Well last time I saw the car (maybe a week ago) the hood/roof/trunk were still pretty glossy considering how old the paint is.

I guess I'll have to go over there to see if it's SS or B/C.

Hello,

Yes they are clearcoated. My father owned an 1989 Buick Century and i have owned way too many other Pontiac's, Buick's, Chevy's to let some one say that they arent Base coat clear coat. Gm actually had a problem with their primer's in the late 80's and 90's. The primer would somehow have a reaction of some sort and allow the paint and clear to just flake away. So to answer your question, Yes it is Base/Clear unless some hack painted it in Single stage enamel.

Good Luck,

Sellncars

OK...they have an 88 Lesabre in grey, and a '90 LeSabre in light blue. I'll just go over there and see if either of them or both, are clearcoated.

It looks like I'll be doing the car on Saturday. And since the owner doesn't care about swirls, I'm just going to do wash / AIO / UPP.

Since I'm doing less steps, I requoted as $40. I think the owner basically wants the paint to be shiny again, and smooth like mine.

Well I just got another email, and apparently he doesn't want it detailed. He just wants a small area to be buffed out, because someone backed into him last week, leaving some scuffs on the paint.
