Help with removing painters tape

So after days of cleaning, brighting and oiling teak on a 43' sailboat I went to remove the tape from the boat and it wont come off except in very little pieces. I used 3m tape and have taped hundreds of boats and never had this issue. Not only is it not coming off but its 6 rolls worth of tape!

Spoke with 3m they said windex with amonia, mineral oil, one of their adhesive removers. I bought the windex, plan to soak the tape with either that or warm water and then attack it with my heat gun to remove it.

Anyone have any similar issues with this? 3m "tech" was horrendous
 
May want to try 3M plastic tape # 471 next time...if you get this off. I'd be...uhh well, upset to say the least.
 
What specific 3M tape did you use?

Was it in direct sunlight or indoors?

Is it adhered to a lacquer surface?

Yeah I have never had a problem with 3M tape leaving residue. Which type is it?

The windex (or isopropyl alcohol) should work great. Let us know.
 
It was product #2090, im waiting for the rain to stop here on long island so I can head down to the marina, I have a bunch of windex with ammonia per 3m's suggestion along with some other stuff and I think that should do the trick and will also bring my heat gun down with me.

I spoke with a few guys at the yard who leave tape on boats long when they are doing projects that last over the course of a few days and they recommended the low density tape which i will be using in the future to prevent any issues.
 
I'd suggest never leaving the tape on the surface for more than a day or two at most. I'm pretty sure some of the 3M painters tape says right on the package "clean release for up to 48hrs"....or something like that.
 
3M adhesive remover is available at most all arts and craft stores. Its a spray on and wipe off product
 
Its all off finally! Wound up taking a plastic scraper getting a good edge and slowly pulling it up evenly and came off pretty clean for the most part and had my friend the chemist whip me up some insane adhesive solvent that was safe for gel and did wonders as well! Now I can finally get it compounded and waxed since wood is done and tape is gone!

glad you got it off.

so what exactly are you switching to now in place of what you were using?
