Help with proper English for business name.

At first (2012) I was calling my business Don`s Auto Detailing. About a year or so ago I decided I should call it Don`s Auto Detail. Now Im back to thinking it should be Detailing.

HELP all you smarter people than I. Should it be ing or no to be the proper terminology?????????????

I like both
The -ing is just present progressive tense, indicating that something is happening

No -ing and it`s just a verb no indication of an action happening, but still gets the action, or point across

Just my 2 cents

I went to state college so take that for what it`s worth.

LOL! Thanks man. State College is more than I did and you didnt help me one speck! No, kidding. It seems that they are both ok.

you didnt help me one speck!

That`s how I feel about those degrees I have on my wall at home sometimes.

I like Don`s Auto Detail better personally

But I`m feeling like -ing is more proper...says the guy with just Detail in his business name, lol

Seeing it as Detail I never liked it on my logo. Then detailing seems so long. UGH its something that should be so simple.

Dan`s Auto Detailing is my business name and it works great..

To me even if I didn`t have those words in my business name, it just flows better when you speak the words too..

It fits great across the business card too..

I vote for the ing.. :)

I"m a tad partial to the `ing` too.

The `ing` adds a present tense to the title, suggesting there`s detailing going on right now. It`s implying currency, vibrance, excitement, and activity and by extension, quality work hopefully.

Stick with the `ing` or go with something completely tangential: Don`s Detailed Perfections. Nah, stick with the `ing`.

Think of it this way:
If you had a painting business, would you call it Don`s House Paint???
Putting two nouns together, the second being implied, meaning it could be interpreted as a noun or a verb, (Auto and Detail) after a singular possessive person (Don`s) just does not sound good nor is it "proper" English. My Mother was an English teacher and her key method of understanding how to construct sentences or phrases with proper English was to read it out loud AND/OR rephrase it with similar terms and see if it sounded OK and made sense, which is what I`ve done with the "paint" term. The addition of "- ing" to the word "detail" makes it an action verb, leaving no implied interpretation of what you do. Sorry to be so "technical`.
(I guess having my Mom as an English teacher for my junior year in high school wasn`t a total waste of time after all. However, if she found out that I thought it was a "total waste of time", I`d be on writing a 500-word essay on "What is Good English" as punishment and it would be due by tomorrow`s class! Now can we move on to correct punctuation?? (or is it "Can we move on to correct punctuation now??) Keep laughing!)

Don, either is fine.

You could branch out:

  • Don`s Details
  • Don the Detailer
  • Detailin` Don
  • Don the Detailin` Dynamo
  • Dynamic Don`s Details

Or Don`s Dynamic Detailing, Dynamic Details by Don.

Don: If you are choosing between `-ing` or no `-ing`, `-ing` sounds nicer. Plus, if I was a customer, I`d be more likely to remember "Don`s Detailing" compared to "Don`s Detail".

Lonnie makes some great points above. Stick with "Detailing" - you don`t want people to think too hard about what your business is when looking for a skilled professional like yourself.

I have to say its funny reading the replies. You all cant read! lol lol lol. I didnt want suggestions on a name but it (as usual) has gone off topic and is very entertaining. Yer too much

how about Don`s Detailing Service?
Im still deciding on mine. Mr. Slick`s Detailing Service, Mr. Slick`s Auto Detailing, or just Mr. Slicks Detailing.
