Help with cabin filter

My brother is moving out of the country and I am taking his 2005 Jetta.



The interior is filthy and smells like a wet dog :( . I will be disinfecting, cleaning, steaming and dressing the whole interior.



I'd like to change the cabin filter too so I have a clean one to finish out the interior reconditioning. Lord knows what's brewing in there not to mention the dust festival the interior is enjoying now.



But, where is it located?! How hard is it to swap out? What is a good one to buy? I see them all over the Internet but don't know which one to buy. They seem cheap, like $15.

Cabin filter usually located behind glove box...its very easy to replace it. You can find step by step instruction in the manual.
 
I was thinking about doing the same thing in my Accord, but I to can't find it. I've been told it's behind the glove box but I must be missing it. I was just going to stick with an OEM filter.
 
Take a look at the respective car forums and you'll find your answers there. The Accord one is easy and you don't even have to be mechanically inclined. I don't know about the VW.
 
On the last generation Jetta's, it was behing a little plastic panel in the engine compartment behind the glovebox basically.

There was an issue with the A/C ducts getting musty. The 'fix' was to run the last mile with the A/C off on high to blow out any moisture.



I think there was a TSB that told dealers to spray a disinfectant of some type in the vents

all you have to do is unlatch that hook thingie
 
It depends on the make and model. The last one I replaced was my wife's JDM Mazda's, which was located under the dash, right up against the vent where the heat comes out; once I located it, it was a snap to change.
 
On the MKIV VW's its under the rain tray on the passenger side. You remove the screws take the cover off, pull the filter out remove from the plastic frame and install is the reverse. It should be in the same spot for the MKV's.



They are cheap and it does make a difference. My car was smelling bad when I first turned it on and it stopped as soon as I changed it. I also plan to blast steam thru the vents to help out. Wurth also makes a HVAC system cleaner. Lysol should work fine as well.
