Help with buying an orbital

Hello,

I am new to detailing and wanted to get some suggestions on some products you guys recommend. I need to get an orbital. It seems like a lot of people use the PC but some rave about the new UDM. What orbital would you guys recommend?

What kind of pads will I need? I see there are different types of colors and pads. I heard about the Edge pads been pretty good. Also, is it better to buy a kit or products separately? I will be using it about 6-8 times a year waxing a '97 Lexus LS400 and '05 Infiniti G35.

I have only used Meguiars #7 polish and #26 wax. The LS needs some help with swirl marks. What products would you recommend in terms of removing swirls and polishes and waxes. Do you guys think the #7 and #26 are good for nice deep, glossy shine.

Thanks for your time. I hope to hear from you soon.

First of all welcome to the site :howdy :dcrules .

The PC is a great go to tool because it has been so widely used in the detailing world and mostly all the people like it. The UDM on the other hand only has been in a small amount of peoples hands and there still is not a clear like or dislike. If you would like to wait it out and see how more and more people like the UDM that could be an option.

The pads that I use and would recommend are the Lake Country full contact pads 7.5" with the hook and loop backing plate. Never had a problem with them. The size will vary on your personal preference (maybe a little smaller). There are new LC pads out that are called CCS heard good things about them too New! 7.5" CCS Curved Foam Pads from Lake Country - Lake Country Pads and on autogeek CCS 7.5 inch Smart Pads™ Curved Edge Foam Pads by Lake Country. I have never used the edge pads but I have heard good and bad stuff about them.

If you can find a really good deal on the PC at some hardware store then go for it there instead of buying it in a package then buy the pads and products separately. Other than that go for the package.

As far as the products its what you think comes out the best.

Hope this helped some :bigups

Try the new Flex XC3401 available at Powerhouse. You can read reviews on it by doing a google search. The phone number is 18888094749. It's $269 plus about $12.00 for UPS ground. It's great compared to UDM or PC.

chips2002 has already stated that he is new to detailing Why would you suggest he buy a rotary this is a recipe for disaster
The rotary is much faster but in the hands of a beginner it usually ends in a new paint job after it is burnt through to bare metal.
Maybe I"m wrong anyone else thing a newbie should start with a powerful rotary given the potential for ruining the Finnish.

No, I think you are exactly right in suggesting not to purchase a rotary. The author of this thread asked for advise on the purchase of a PC.

I would purchase a PC from a vendor here on the forum. Good customer service, proper pads, and detailing products to do the detail. Plus, you are able to apply a 10% discount and get free shipping if purchased altogether.

Hi chips2002,
This is a great starter kit
New! The Ultimate Detailing Machine™ and CCS Foam Pad Kit - New Arrivals

As far as product...thats a can of worms. There are many great products available. I will say that Poorboys products are great for swirls along with the Optimum line. It all depends on the degree of marring or swirling to give specific product advise. There are plenty of threads on swirl removal on this site...Read on>>>>and on>>>>

Actually the Flex XC 3401 is a fairly new orbital that has, from my understanding, a forced rotation (160 - 480 rpm). While it isn't a rotary it does seem more powerful than the PC's that are currently available. I haven't seen many reviews on it yet so that and the price would keep me from suggesting this Flex to a beginner. With a PC or UDM there is a larger user base for him to get info from.

Actually, I would like to see some reviews on that product, as it seems like it might be an interesting piece of equipment.

Also wondering if it uses a backing plate that would allow the use of other pads.

There are some reviews over on Autopia. My understanding is it currently ships with a ~6.5" BP but there is talk of a ~5 or 5.5" BP coming out soon.

Thanks. After reading quite a few of the reviews, I still have some questions. But this definitely looks like a tool worth considering if you are in the market for a polisher.
