Yes I am very new to Detailing and Im sure it shows.

anyways,

on Zaino's website they offer a polish for Clear Coats (Z-2)

and a polish for regular paint (Z-3).

my problem is that I have no fricken idea what my car has.

it's a 93 corrolla which has never been detailed before.

up until two weeks ago i dont think its ever had a car wash.

anyone know which product i should buy?

many thanks.

Mark, you would really do yourself a service by using the search...there are probably 5,000 threads on Zaino alone and many more on single stage and clear-coat finishes. Use the tools available, and you'll get your answers much faster.

Now, since the thread is here I might as well try to help you with your question. When you buff your car with a towel do you get paint transfer onto the towel? Let's say your car is green and you buff and the towel begins to turn green itself....then you have a single-stage paint. That's what Zaino calls "normal paint"...If no color transfers, then you have a clear-coated suface.

thank you StickKing1 for the help.

very much appreciated.

just found this site 2 days ago, becoming very well acquainted with the search feature. will try to stick to searches much more in the future.

thanks for the reply.

I would like to add. Zaino won't do something if not anything for you're car.

If the car is in that bad of a condition, I doubt a dawn wash and 10000 coats of Zaino will help any.

The secret to the shine Autopians get is proper paint prep. A paint sealant/wax and proper upkeep is icing on the cake.

What color is the 1993 Corolla? I have worked on a 1991 (red) and two 1995 (both were sahdes of green) Corolla's, both had clear on them.

Wash the car, if it feels gritty/sandy, clay it, then polish the car with a polish or a compound like 3M PI III Machine Glaze or 3M PI III Rubbing Compound. If you get color transfer then its non clear coated. Sometimes I deal with paint so bad my applicator turns black not from paint but from contamination.

I would just get Z5 first since it can work with clear and non clear coated cars (along with the proper bonding agent, Z1, or ZFX, and the wash adn QD 7/6 are invaluable.) I was working on a silver BMW yesterday and the Z6 between coats really brought out the Ti metallic in the paint, owner siad wow shine is different but much richer and more Titanium is popping out, he liked it.

Once you polish out the paint and make it perfect (my finding is that Zaino/Klasse actually make paint defects pop out even more, YMMV) lay down some Z5 with either Z1 or ZFX (I have both and bring out either or for certain situations) and latter add Z2 or Z3 depending on the car.

Thanks! thats good stuff to know.

my corrolla has light blue metalic coat.

planned on claying the entire body this weekend to get things started.

the corrolla does have quite a few deep paint chips on the hood.

Plan on doing the paint & chip repair tutorial by David W. Bison

(http://www.autopia.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=14072&highlight=touchup+paint )before Zaino.

just curious, can I buy 3M PI III compound locally or is it internet only?

oh yeah thanks for all the advice.

If your finish is in need of some good polishing (lots of swirls, some faded or oxidized paint) you may want to start with Meg's DACP. This is a cleaner AND polish in one liquid. This is also one of the products used quite often with great results that you can then agument by using a glaze such as 3M PIII-MG.

Mostly it's done by a PC (Porter-Cable) polisher and a yellow cutting pad or white polish pad depending on the condition of the finish. It can be used by hand, but you are going to have arms like AHHHRNOLD later! If you want really stunnin g results, invest in a PC. Not much money and you'll love how well it works without damage to a finish that can happen with a rotary in inexperienced hands.

Here's the best price out there for a PC: Your new PC

Also, for products and more insight: Products and more

Get your finish as glossy as possible! Remember, wax,Zaino or other sealants are just "protecting" your finish and the wet look really comes from the polish and the effort into it. After you polished, wash the car with Dawn to remove any remaining oils (all polishes have some type of oil) or use a water/alcohol mix, then I wash once more right after with Zaino Z7. Then, mix up a batch of ZFX/Z5 and apply three coats. Spray Z6 B4 and after each coat very lightly to increase shine. COntinue next day with a new batch until you're happy with it and most if not all swirls are gone. Then put the Z2 on top of the Z5, same thing, I use ZFX/Z2 up to three coats spraying between and after each coat.

If you experience a slight streaking when removing Z5 after it cured, spray a very light amount of Z7/water mix and wipe again. You can tell it's cured if you wipe a finger over and it's glossy. If not, not cured yet. Humidity will effect it and it does take longer, so be patient.
