Help On Right Pad's Using A Meguiars Random Orbital

Hi I'm a new comer to this site and to the world of "machine detailing." I have a 2003 jet black Mustang Mach 1 which has some minor sratches and swirl marks. I need advice as to what meguiars pads to use and which one to use with which product... the products I intend on using are as follows.

ps I currently have maguiars SOFTBUFF W8006 ( which is a polishing pad), SOFTBUFF W9006 ( which is a finishing pad ). I've used the pads a few weeks before with maguiars products... do I need to buy new one's or can I still use these? I called maguirs and they told me not to wash the pads.... they said just to let them dry and then to pad them off by hitting them against your hand. The pain has very minor paint defects and has been garaged since its purchase so would a random orbital my maguires be sufficant or do I need to step up to a metabo? Thank you for your input and any suggestions on variations or eliminations... :waxing:

2nd Granitize Black Magic

3rd Poorboy's EX

4th Poorboy's Natty's Blue
 
Depends how defined and/or how deep the edges of the swirls actually are whether a random orbital such as your Meguiar's will do the trick or not .

An orbital , green pad and Optimum would knock them out no doubt .

Maybe the Burgandy pad + your PC + some DACP ?

Followed up with wipe down , then optimum + polishing pad
 
Thanks for the input... Does anyone know what pads I would use if I was to use the maguiars? Also I forgot to mention that the very first step and second... I'm going to be using....



1st Clay

2nd Paint cleaner step 1 of 3 by maguiars ( probably W7006 cutting foam pad by maguiars )

3rd Optimum Polish ( please advise as to what foam pad I should use by maguiars )

4th Granitize Black Magic ( please advise as to what foam pad I should use by maguiars )

5th Poorboy's EX ( thinking about using W8006 polishing pad by maguiars )

6th Poorboy's Natty's Blue paste ( I believe that this could only be applied by hand please advise )

ooo ooo more input from me !!!

I've seen some of the more experienced guys here work magic with a dual action PC ( meguiars' G100 )

Only thing I can suggest is work it slow letting the DA do it's work . Maybe 1" per second ...

W7006 + M8332 ( #83 - Dual Action Cleaner Polish ) SHOULD remove your swirl marks very effectively . The paint cleaner is not going to remove swirls

I'm honestly only recommending #83 because that's tried and true on this board for PC's .

Follow that up #80 Speed Glaze and your yellow Meg's polishing pad or Optimum if you don't feel like buying a 32oz bottle of #80 @ $15 or so .....

Also I would follow up with the Optimum and your finishing pad simply because the only info I found on Granitize is that they no longer sell Black Magic . Therefore it must not have been that great of a product , and therefore I would never ever apply " not so great a product " by machine .

Just because it's formulated for black doesn't mean it's worth anything . They still sell their W-9 ( BlackMagic is W-10 ) and that says apply ONLY by hand .

Also if BlackMagic has carnuba in it you dont want to leave it on the finish before you apply EX .

If you polish your paint out as above , and heck even Optimum alone would do the trick if you move thru the various pads ( although #83 / DA is tried and true ) just washing your car after polishing and applying EX 2 coats 24 hours apart will leave the car looking stunning .

There are some good techniques for doing it ( BY HAND ) just read around . Then the Blue Natty's over top would DEFINATELY set the look off even more .

I think the only decision you need to make is if you want to go with #83 or if you NEED to go with it instead of just using Optimum the entire process ..

Do you have any links to the Black Magic stuff ?
 
Another thing don't use #83 on a hot car / in the sun / while hood is hot from engine running recently .

It will gum up your pad badly . get a pad brush also .
 
Thank you very much for the input I think I'm going to take your advice... but what do you think the best paint cleaner is to use before the optimum polish?
 
I think I've narrowed it down...

1st clay

2nd #83 cleaner/polish meguiars ( using burgundy cutting pad )

3rd #83 cleaner/polish meguiars ( using yellow polishing pad )

4th optimum polish ( using yellow polishing pad )

5th #7 show car glaze ( using yellow polishing pad )

6th Natty’s Paste Wax (BLUE) hand applied



any suggestions addtions or eliminations or variation in pads ... sorry if being too redundant!
 
Here's Meguiar's chart of recommended pads for their products.



They never recommend using the burgundy W7006 cutting pad with the PC because they feel it can haze some finishes (but some here have reported trying it successfully with some paint/product combos).



A look at the chart basically shows they suggest any cutting product should be used with the yellow W8006 polishing pads if you want the abrasive action and non-cutting products are best used with the tan W9006 finishing pad.



I've never quite figured out why Meguiar's is against washing the pads. As far as I can tell, most folks here wash them (I know I do). Meg's does expect you to dedicate the pad to a given product. If you switch products on a pad you need to wash the old product out unless they are very similar.
