Its probably a $5 wax they bought at an auto parts store.

The one we use at work costs $12.99 for 4oz I think...1 bottle will do 2-3 vehicles of average size. We charge $199 for the "sealant"

It's a joke and I feel bad for the customer, cause by the time it gets to me, it's too late to tell the customer it's a joke...and then the sales manager will probably have me fired... Oh well. 1 more month in that hokey place!

And for reference, this is the stuff we use:

TricorAcid Rain Paint Sealant

The rust inhibitor module and fabric protectant are actually both pretty neat.

I feel you on that as I am in the same boat only the stuff we are ripping people on is Xzilon.

What you guys have to realize is that it isn't the product that the people are buying; read the fine print. What you are buying is another warranty that the sales department can cash on. The reality is that dealerships really don't make too much money up front on the sales of a car, rather what they bank on is that the customer buys as many extras as possible, which warranties being the big ticket item.

What these dealer applied sealants actually are is very simply a warranty that says if any surface on the car oxidizes, fades, stains, or such that you can file a claim with the company, and they will pay someone (usually the detailer that the dealership uses) to come out, fix the problem, than reapply the sealant. The problem is that a lot of salesmen get this idea from all the advertisement that it is this miracle product when it is just a warranty! With that in mind, it can be a worth while option to ensure that your paint will last 5 years without worry to some people who don't know a damn about taking care of a car and think it is nothing more than a box on wheels with paint that you change the oil on, put gas in, and go.

To the rest of us though who aren't completely oblivious to taking care of our cars, don't like dealing with loop holes in claims (or making claims period), and can spend the 30 minutes a week in keeping it clean, it would be a moronic waist of money. And that leads up to another funny point; there are TONS of loop holes in those warranties which will clearly state that you have to keep up on the maintenance with washing with a auto soap instead of degreaser/dish soap otherwise they will void the warranty!

I hope that helps some of you who may have customers who claim they have this dealer applied sealant and don't want a full detail (or a detail at all).

Some of the dealer-applied products aren't bad at all (e.g., ValueGuard's stuff). For people who view their vehicles as mere appliances they can work out fine.

A friend of ours with serious physical limitations and no time/etc. to deal with getting her vehicle detailed does very well having the dealership take care of it every time it's in for service. Not the way *we* might want to approach it, but it works well for her; the whole thing is utterly transparent to her (i.e., zero hassle, she never gives it a thought, and she uses it as a final bargaining chip when negotiating her lease- basically gets it for free) and her SUV is always one of the best-looking vehicles in the parking lot. The guys at the dealership actually do a sorta-OK job.
