Today was my second time using my PC 7336 from Lowes. I have the Sonus SFX pad kit from autopia. I was using the blue pad and #3 finishing up my dad's CR-V. I had the PC on 4 and as I was making a pass the backing plate and blue pad literally flew away and the metal was left screwed into the PC. In the split secod that the pad flew of the metal hit the car and put a scratch and quarter sized dent in it on the bottom of the driver's door. I dunno what to do. Ive been reading on this forum for almost a year and I followed instructions I found on this site very well. I did A LOT of research on the methods of usage before buying so Im pretty sure I knew what I was doing. I searched and found one other thread where this happened. Luckily for that person their PC didnt slam into the car. This really sucks. Someone please advise.

Heres pics of the damage.

The BP appears to be flawed from the pics provided. I would contact the manufacturer or supplier and see if they can assist......Its unfortunate it happened, yet fortunate it wasnt worse!

Is it right to use a backing plate the same dia. as the pad?? I thought it was safer for the backing plate to be smaller?

d3mon I was using the pad and BP that came in the SFX kit so I was under the assumption that it was designed to work.

I saw your posting and as luck would have it, you are not alone. Another poster used a Tropi-Care brand of BP and had the same problem. Since many of the retailers buy from the same manufacturer, I would not blame Sonus or the Perfect Shine per se. The blame lies more with the actual maker of the BP.

The nice thing is DavidB has OUTSTANDING customer support so you are in luck there.

Thats why I don't buy backplates that are made in China for the same price you buy a genuine industrial quality one Made in Canada or the USA ! Looks like you were flex it too much and the metal plate that in the vinyl ripped off.

I had my LC plate de-bond, but I caught it before it did any damage.

Sorry to see that happened to you. I've seen another one of those bp's come apart and do the exact same thing before.

The Edge system with the hex drive is probably safer, or even an LC bp since it has the molded plastic core/backer.

Ouch sorry to hear about that.

One of my velcro backings came off my cutting pad from TC, I emailed them and Steve did right by me. Sent me a brand new cutting pad, with a FULL velcro backing pad which made me feel much more easy.

Im still using the TC backing plate however, I will be more cautious and watch for symptoms of it maybe being defective or something.

What does everyone here use for a backing plate?

Ouch that scares me now. I hadn't seen anything like that but after looking at yours and the person with the Tropi-care kit I will start to check my BP before I even start on the car.

i have had this happen to me mine was caused by dropping the PC and it landing on the edge of the backing plate, there was no visible damge to the backing plate but 2-3 cars later it seperated. is there the slightest possibilaty that you might have dropped it or banged it against something? also how much pressure was you aplying to it when it broke? i have had backing plates break on pnumatic DA sanders from using too much pressure...

Na never dropped the PC or plate. It really just had to be a faulty one. Where the BP seperated from the metal piece, it wont even fit back together. Like I cant stick the metal piece into the hole it came out of the hole is too small. O well. I emailed customer service hopefully they get back to me soon. Other than that the car came out really well. I was pretty much done when it broke so I finished the car by hand. I was only going for paint restoration so dont complain about the dirty rims or the rusty hideous running board things. I just wanted to remove swirls.

Just wanted to let everyone know that customer service took care of me. They sent out a new BP quickly after I emailed them free of charge. Props to them. Also any comment on the pictures above or criticism?

I find that I replace my backing plates on my PC and rotary about every three years due to normal "wear and tear". Since we are coming up on three years for the PC, I guess it's time to order!

Sounds like this would be a good reason to simply detach the backing plate from the polisher before storing, and to replace the backing plate if dropped.

Sorry to hear about your misfortune...nothing to do about the damage other than to touch it up. Bondo won't cut it unless you re-do that entire panel.
