I am really ignorant regarding cameras and photography. My wife wants a digital camera and I need advice. I know that she is very interested in getting one with a zoom lens. It will be used primarily for family gatherings, vacations, a few of the Titan's games, and of course to post some pictures on Autopia.

Just hoping to join the 21st century for under $250....$300 max.

Canon:

A300 is great and is on the low end of the price range. It's a 3MP. No zoom though.

A60 (2MP) / A70 (3MP) are nice as well. I just picked up the A70 and it should be delivered shortly.

Make sure to pickup a 128MB Memory chip. Amazon.com usually has deals on memory so check them out.

Nikon digitals don't come with a view finder so that into consideration.

We bought my GF parents a Fugi 2650 - Nice camera. Takes nices pictures but there no Audio with the video feature if that is an issue for you. It's a 2MP.

I'd sugget going with a 3MP from Canon. Perhaps save up another $50. 2MP is fine now but will probably be considered old in the near future. Plus, if you do happen to get a great photo and you would like to blow it to 8x10, the 2MP will cause graining.

4 areas to consider:

1. MegaPixels

2. True Zoom (non digital) 2x, 3x

3. Size

4. Video mode with Audio?

5. Interchangeable lens (i.e. A60/A70)
