Bop's Auto Wash & Detail
My dream business! I'm giving it a try for the first time and would certainly appreciate any tips/advice with starting an "Auto Detailing" shop.
I Just rented a basic garage, 3bay unit with water/electric. Fortunately the spot is already known for its "Auto Detailing" services through previous businesses :bigups
I've been detailing cars my whole life and love it. I can't say I'm a professional, but I did work as a Detailer for a well known local car wash for 4 years. What's the best way to learn and understand all there is to know about Auto Detailing...?

Who knows the outcome but we all have to start somewhere! :excited:

Thanks folks!

What's the best way to learn? You've taken the first step: joining Autopia! I would also join Autogeek as well.

Second step: Read read read read read and read some more. Watch videos about what you read. Check back on the reading while watching the video. Read some more.

Third step: Go out and try... on your own car. Always your car first before the customers!

Oh and GThg3zx, Welcome to Autopia: the land where cars become nice, shiny, and swirl free!

If you find yourself going on the forum at 3 AM, don't worry. This is normal Autopian behavior.

If you find yourself wondering what new threads are being posted, don't worry. This is normal Autopian behavior.

If you find yourself wondering when new product reviews are coming up, don't worry. This is normal Autopian behavior.

If you find yourself ordering far more than you ever thought you would need, don't worry. This is normal Autopian behavior.

So sit back, relax, and enjoy the forum. Break out a cold one if you want, as there is a LOT of good information here.

WELCOME!

Oh and food's on the table:

:welcome: to Autopia forums. As said above, read and read some more. I am learning to do my own car correctly and this is the place.

Hey Thanks Everybody for the advice and comments! Not even my wife expresses a warm welcome home after busting my ass all day! :) Ha Ha!

I have to make a fairly large purchase of equipment obviously so any suggestions on "imperative" tools/items would be great! ... I think HomeDepot would be good for some things (vacuum) ... or through the website "DetailKing.com" ... this a good company? Not trying to spend thousands though :) ...

As always, Thanks Gentlemen!

Not trying to spend thousands though :) ...Jim

I know i am just a noob and I saw a little humor in this (my smart ass side of me). Never say never! I told myself I am trying to stay on a budget when it comes to detailing my car. In the past if I spent $20 a year on supplies I was doing good. Well my current ride I bought this past Spring I decided I am going to learn the art of detailing so I can bring a nice clean car to car shows but I was going to keep on a budget and spend the money on gas and try to keep it under $200 for a DA polishing machine, towels and waxes etc. Keep in mind this is one car! Well, that budget is blown and I don't care to add it up but thinking I am I am hitting the $500 mark.

With that said, since you are making a business of it my suggestion is buy professional equipment that is going to last. At least chemicals, waxes etc, once you have a product line or products you plan on using you can buy in bulk (by the gallon) and save a lot of money. There is a detail guide here (button at top), also there is a store here (button also at the top) that offers a lot of stuff at reasonable prices. I have also used Superior Car Care myself, some have been using Auto Geek, you know about Detail King, I have also bought some stuff through Amazon to get the free super saver shipping. As far as what is considered professional equipment others will have to chime in.
