As far as protecting the lens after you polish, this is the best:

Ask anyone who details for aviation, and they will tell you that most pilots wont let you use anything besides plexus.

Hi, what I have done for years, and it last for quite a long time is using 2000grit wetsanding paper, wetsanding them for a while, and buffing the day lights out of them. All of my customers have been happy, I have done family member cars in which they still have and never a complaint. I also finish them off with a polymer sealant.
