HD Uno (or any polish) by hand?

I recently bought a 3 year old commuter car with 60K on it and it looks like it's been parked outside for most/all of it's life. The paint is in pretty good condition, but could definitely look better with a polish. I've never polished before, but have done a lot of waxing with Zaino. I'm hesitant to buy a porter cable since I might not use it more than a couple times. I have 2 nicer cars, but I'm not sure I trust myself to polish them.

I'm thinking to buy HD Uno and polish by hand. I wonder if I'll be able to make it nice and shiny within a reasonable amount of time & effort. I'm used to applying Zaino, sometimes 3-4 layers and it usually takes me about 20 minutes per layer.

The car is a dark red (almost maroon), has some spiders probably from being washed improperly, some scratches (not too concerned about), some contanimants (need to clay bar). Other than that the paint is actually in pretty decent shape. My secondary goal is to get a little experience polishing.

If anyone has any success stories polishing by hand with HD Uno or any other polish please share.

Another question, since it has some contanimants I do want to clay bar it - but would polishing take care of that anyway or do I still need to clay and then polish?

Thanks,

You should definitely clay before you polish, no question. As far as the PC, there's some great deals on the new XP, I would get one or a few white and orange pads. You won't regret it. It'll save you so much time and effort. And as far as your nicer cars, once you get the hang of the PC on your beater, you wont be afraid to polish your other cars.

Here's a nice write up on polishing by hand though.
