Hazy New Paint

This is the second time I've run into this and I figured I would post again to see if anyone had any suggestions.

I was doing a friend's car, he got an aftermarket hood and it was painted about six months ago.

Anyway, the paint looks hazy for lack of a better word. It's nice and glossy from a few feet away, but when you look at it in the halogens, the reflection looks almost like polish that hasn't been broken down properly. It's glossy, but the reflections are far from clear and not nearly as clear as his factory paint.

I hit it with my UDM with a yellow pad and optimum polish, but it didn't seem to make ANY difference.

I was told it may be the way the paint dried. In other words it didn't dry properly so it looks hazy.

Is there a way to correct this with the UDM or is this something that really needs to be repainted? Or would a rotary need to be employed? I've never used a rotary so I wouldn't be able to do it.

Thanks for any help.

It all depends on which coat of clear the hazyness occured. The main cause ive seen before, painters dont let each coat flash long enough. If the clear coat doesnt flash properly, the vapors or whatnot get sealed in the new coat of clear(thus causing the hazyness) If the hood was baked in a paintbooth, it probably wouldnt have that problem.

It may need to be repainted, but it doesnt hurt to try!! Maybe wetsand it with 2000, then polish it out, see if it helps. If hes going to repaint it anyway, it def wouldnt hurt to try and polish it out.

A UDM may not correct the problem, its hard to tell without actually seeing it!

Sorry if i wasnt any help!

Hey thanks man :)

Yeah that's what I was told that maybe it wasn't dried properly. He did say it was raining all that week that they had it to paint so maybe the weather contributed... I don't know.

Anyway, I've never wetsanded anything before hehe so I think I'll just tell him to live with it or maybe just take it back and see if the shop can do anything... although it's been six months so I doubt it.

Yea, humidity is a killer if it was humid. Wet sanding isnt soo bad...well starting out not knowing how to do it, yea its tough, i recommend a teacher if you want to learn!

I doubt a shop will take it back, but just have him go in and be like, " i had this painted here a couple months ago, you told me this hazyness would go away, but it didnt!" They should have record on file so they dont question you.

It never hurts to try...unless they beat you up...hahaha! Goodluck!

I never did wetsand this car and was wondering if anyone else had any opinions or had run into this before.

I would imagine 90 percent of people wouldn't even notice something like this. But I want to know if someone else has encountered this and have you "fixed" it.

I tried using Optimum Polish and Optimum Compound. Yellow pad, orange pad, white pad. Nothing seemed to make a difference.

The finish looks perfect except for this. I mean no swirls or anything... just slightly less clear than the surrounding paint.
