So why does this product need to by applied so thinly? I'm not saying that slathering it on is a good idea, but wouldn't a super-thin application have little effect?
The "need" is basically just to ensure easy removal. I've found that even very thick coats will wipe off easily enough if you let them cure long enough. But it *is* a waste of product and many people get streaking and other problems when they apply it too thick.
As best I can tell, LSPs, especially ones like SG, bond at virtually the molecular level. Seems like 99% of what most people apply gets wiped off. Even when I apply so thin I can't see it, by the time I buff it all off there's a fair amount on my MF towel. Not much actually sticks to the paint.
Durability: Six *super* thin applications of SG on our daily-driver minivan lasted over a year. That's despite frequent washings and spot-claying with *every* wash. No QDs, no refresher coats of SG, nothing for more than 12 months after the last application. When I redid it it was *still* well protected (slick, beading, "felt like SG", etc.). I sorta

to admit this, but I *still* haven't redone the roof! It's been at least 16 months and the roof is still fairly slick and is just starting to sheet (as opposed to bead). Those six coats even protected the paint well enough that I had hardly *any* wash-induced marring (or marring of any other kind either) despite washing sorta carelessly with a BHB. Exceptionally thin coats of SG work just fine
