Well I decided I was going to clean up the paint on my new 97 Golf.
Lets just say the paint condition was horrendous but nothing that I thought
I couldn't handle. Well I think I may have thought wrong. For what ever
reason I am not able to get out some simple looking swirls mainly on the
rear bumper, I have a good amount of holograms which I think I mostly
took care of but it has not been an easy detail. I am on day two of working
and maybe 50% done. I am not satisfied with the results what so ever.
Am I expecting to much from a PC on this paint?
Here is the process I have done so far:
Washed with dawn
Claybar
On the roof and hood:
5.5" orange with Menzerna intensive polish
5.5" white with Menzerna final polish
(Still many light scratches after this)
On the driver side.
Wetsand with 1500 and 2500 (mostly 2500)
5.5" orange with Menzerna intensive polish (approximately two times)
5.5" white with Menzerna final polish (approximately two times)
Now after this I still had many buffer trails and lights swirls I am guessing
from the wet sanding. Only thing is even after say four attempts I still had
very lights scratches/swirls.
My process for the PC is usually adding about a quarter size drop of polish
or an outer ring on the pad. Then I work it on with 3 and move up to 6 and
usually do about 4-5 passes on a 2'x2' area. When I use the white pad
I will usually do the same but only go up to speed 5.(Am I doing this wrong?)
I moved onto the bumper and forget it nothing would come out.
I also try some optimum compound and polish I had and the polish seemed
to help with the hologram problem I was having on the passenger side but I
still can see a little.
Ok onto the pictures.

All door handles were like this or worse:
