have you ever asked people

We charge $150.00 for a basic detail. It includes clean interior, engine, wheels , buff and carnuba wax. Claying is extra ,so is leather dressing and sealants. Vans and Suvs are extra. With our customers it is easier to start with a lower price and upsell, although a lot of customers just want a basic detail. We have a lot of repeat customers, and for are real good customers we offer pick up and delivery if they live in the area, or we will drop them off at the train. We do show car detailing, but its a lot more money. Thats under carrage waxing and etc. WE have a bunch of cars going to McCormick place for Chevy Fest to detail.

I get that too. When people tell me what other places charge, I ask them "what all does that include" and I usually hear something like "wash, vacuum, wax, shampoo the mats and dress the vinyl/leather". I then tell them my price includes all that plus claying to remove bonded contaminents, paint correction via polishing, deep cleaning all interior surfaces, cleaning and dressing the fenderwells, deep clean the wheels and dress the tires, clean the door jambs, dress the weather stripping, etc. Their eyes usually bug out of their head and say "well, no wonder you charge more!". Sadly, some people don't care if you do all the extra stuff. :nixweiss

well got my first call after revising my "pricing" for people who ask how much!

"how much for a minivan that isnt as bad as the other car I had you do on the inside, and I just want some protection for the outside, or maybe that clay thing you did on the other car. The outside kinda needs to be restored a little, maybe."

my reply, well for a wash and interior clean up lets start it at 150 depending on just how bad it is, and go from there. As for the polishing and clay, how about I do a section sided by side again for you to see if that is something you want? so it could be anywhere from 150-350 by the time I am done."

"ok sounds good, see you saturday!"

-------I dont know if its because its repeat business and he was happy with the results last time, or the way i pitched it, but it was easier than saying 350 off the bat! I'll have to keep this form of "pricing" up when people call!

I told my older (60's) friend that I spent the whole day detailing my sister's car and he thought I was putting on pinstriping! :hairpull :wall

i've had a bunch of people say, "Oh, so you put spoilers and vinyl on, right?

I tell people that a full detail is "all the steps necessary to make their vehicle look like it just rolled out of the factory".

I try to start off with terms like "polish" and "interior shampoo" that the average customer is going to understand, then I slowly explain the advantages of my approach - how I extract the carpets as opposed to just shampooing and vacuuming, how I use abrasives to remove swirls and marks in the paint rather than hiding them with fillers.

Bingo! It's all about a) how much it is worth to them (which has nothing to do with real value and what kind of car they own), b) how much they are willing to part with (which has nothing to do with how much they can afford), and c) sticker shock even though final price will end up same. If you go to movies with date which one of these will drive you away as you approach cashier and ask how much for movies:

a) "That will be $50 for total experience"

b) "Ticket is $10" (doesn't mention it will be $20 for both of you, doesn't mention you will pay more for soda than elsewhere for expensive drink, doesn't mention popcorn, doesn't mention snacks)

You'll walk away on first one but you will walk in if second one is used even though it will cost you same.

Also, second approach lets customer retain control where they want to stop, first one is either all or nothing which often turns into nothing.

Back when I had a small yellow page 3 line listing, someone actually called and asked what I charge for tune-ups.

I just had a lady call today and ask if I could put on her drivers side mirror. Aparently it fell off.....I didn't ask! Hehehe! I told her to contact a body shop.
