My Winter Project list is long. On it I have included sanding down and repainting both mufflers and exhaust tips as they are starting to show their age.

What would you guys use to sand these things down? Exhaust will remain on the car during the process.

Any suggestions? Thanks. :p

I wire brush then sand with wet/dry sandpaper being sure to remove all corrosion then repaint with appropriate color. I use either Rustoleum Aluminum Silver or Eastwoods Exhaust Silver. I results last about a year. I just did my BMW 2002 last week.

Be sure to mask the surrounding areas with painter paper (available in rolls) or newspaper. Tin foil works great for odd shapes.

Stainless steel brush or brass? What grit sandpaper? Is plastic just as good for overspay prevention?

Nice idea with the foil; I can see how that would work well. I am actually going to use BBQ paint on the mufflers and the tips as the factory finish was a matte black. The BBQ paint was something that was recommended by many other Vette owners. I think that it will probably work.

I used a brass brush. Almost anything will work. I use a medium 400 grit sandpaper. Plastic is fine for masking but it will "deflect" a greater amount of overspray (paper will absorb) so be sure to mask a wide area. BBQ paint is perfect.

Take before and after pics if posible!:p

Very interesting point in regard to paper vs. plastic for overspray - I had never given that point much thought. I will take that advice and use the paper instead, thanks. :up Thanks for the help!! :bounce
