I was just wondering if anyone of the member have good places around the Chicago area to buy supplies . I always seem to find the same stuff in Target,Murrays and Pep boys.Has anyone found a store that really has a good selection ?

In the Seattle area I go to "High Performance" shops. They seem to carry better products. I also look for private family owned auto stores, they too can carry better products.

If all else fails, you can always order over the internet and get what you want.

Hope this helps, now start looking in the phone book :)

Thanks , I've been to a few places in the city,And i have gotten alot through the internet.I was just looking for a place to help out when i get that I NEED IT NOW feeling.

I have to admit that when I lived in Chicago I had a difficult time finding stores that carried high-quality car care products. It's not really a car town so no one cares, it seemed to me.

The only place I can think of is Emmon's Coachworks (IIRC). It is on Roosevelt Ave in Villa Park. It's tucked away in a strip mall.

check out http://www.emmonscoachworks.com/home.html

I never found a place like that in the city. I mean, I found a great canoe shop but very little for cars.

Good luck.

Thanks for the link Bret.Yes there isn't much of a selection that i have found yet.I'll have to remember that place if i'm in that area.

I used to live in Chicago and was a big Murray's fan. For a chain, their detailing selection is impressive. They carry the entire Meguiar's line- even the #20 polymer sealant- and even 303!

Bretfaz- You're from LA, right? (I have seen you post on Edmunds- you are the one who suggested I check out Autopia! Thanks!) Do you know of any good detailing stores out here?

i checked out that coachworks link....at least they talk like they knowwhat their doing....it looks nice...sell products too(thats a bad thing...dont need another place to buy from )...they have Zymol all over their site...only in IL though

Yes, that's me from Edmunds. As you can tell I'm a bit more civil here

I am originally from L.A. (born and raised), lived in Chicago for 5 years, and now live in suburban Atlanta. Plus frequent nationwide travel for the past 10 years has allowed me to see this great country and how folks take care of their cars. I always try to find local stores that carry detailing products. Kinda like the thread a few days ago where Autopians shopped the drug store looking for something new. Heck, I've been doing weird stuff like that since I was 13. ;)

Lemme put some brain power into L.A. area retailers selling the good stuff. I left in 1993 so I'm not as clued in as I used to be. I do remember Beverly Hills Motoring Accessories having a real good selection. But I bought most of my stuff from a place called Walt's Wax Shop in Santa Ana. Also there was a distributor that used to have a big stall at the Orange County Swap Meet and I bought tons of stuff from him. I think he's long gone but he had an amazing selection.

Anyway, it's nice to be here. I've lurked for a long time but decided to post occassionally so you'll prolly see me around a bit.

Cheers!

Thanks Prinz, I'm on the north side about a mile east of Wrigley. But my job takes me all over the place. So anywhere in the city would be good. The best luck i've had is Murrays and Pep boys.

I used to live in Chicago, too, not far from you (Hermitage and Wilson in Ravenswood).

Murray's was my favorite store, but I wasn't all that knowledgable when I lived in Chicago. Bretfaz and Prinz will have many ideas. They are extremely knowedgable about detailing. Bretfaz is a former professional detailer from Southern California. PrinzII's car is especially impressive- a picture of it is in his .sig- it's a '94! How many '94's have you seen in Chicago that can compare to his?

I used to wash my car at the coin-op right next to Wrigley Field. What a perfect location- the Cubs and a car wash!

Dude, I'm near Addison and Western. I never washed my car there. But spent quite a few hours across the street at Bernies, enjoying a few cold ones.

Back to the topic...

Next time someone "makes" you go to IKEA in shaunburg, go a little bit west on Golf Road to the "Car Boutique" (do not remember the street, I think it is roselle, but I am not sure)... They specialize in aftermarket stuff...

for detailing they "only" have Zymol, California waterblades and dusters, EF black opal, PS21

one time I saw AIO! (one time only)

Since I am editing this post I will repeat what others have said... the place is VERY expensive and no detailing knowledge.

I mail order to get my stuff and even with freight it is chaeper than that place.

I live right around the corner from Car Boutique in Schaumburg. They have other locations as well..I think one in Glencoe and one in Chicago (extreme northside). That place is a major ripoff and the jokers working there rarely know what they are doing. But, if they have Klasse and other decent detailing stuff, I haven't seen it. It is just north of Golf Road on Roselle Road (west side of the road).

Just mailorder stuff you cant find locally. It is too bad we have to do this but thats life.
