Happy Birthday gewb

The plastic protector sheets that come on cars from the factory, is there any way to get that material to attach to the car aftermarket?? I am wondering because a customer of mine has a 69 SS Camaro which is extremely special edition that he would like to get detailed, and have the carpet plastic, seatcover plastic, steering-wheel wrap plastic, and paint protector plastic applied so he can put it under a cover in a 'airtight bubble' for storage. (the paint protector plastic would be to prevent all possibility for scratching on his 3-month old 20K paintjob.)

I think that stuff will stick with nothing more than natural static.

If he is going to put it in a bubble, I think it would actually be safer (esp. if he is the guy to put it in/out) to put NOTHING on the paint. All it is going to do is increase the chance of scratching on application and removal. Even if you JUST waxed it, the chance of getting that suff on over a 100% dust-free finish is pretty small. The car and the paint will not deteriorate inside the bubble.

carguy, good advice, but what I was asking is if anyone knows where/if I can BUY the plastic to put on the car.

I will see about this possibility, but what he explained it to me as was not one of those 'air pump' bubbles, but dry-packing the car with no fluids and putting it inside a 'vacuum bag' so to speak, so the 'bubble' would have zero air in it. in so doing, he will have a car cover on, and wants this plastic on the paint directly so it will not scratch when he vacs the air out.

I was asked if I would be willing to help him do the dry packing..... I will be detailing the vehicle inside and out, as well as undercarriage, at the location we will be storing it at.

Can I ask why he is doing this? Why would you pay 20k for a paintjob and then cover it up?

How long does he plan to store it?

I'd also like to know where to buy those plastic sheets. I could use some for other purposes.

He is doing this because he is in the process of building a new house and does not have the garage space in the old house to keep the car (needs it so he can store packed boxes)...... the house will be completed in about 1-1.5 years and he will be in various stages of moving throughout that time.

In his new house he is getting a 4-car garage, as well as a 2-car 'working garage' with 2 pits for working on vehicles. He will begin restoration on a '69 GTO Judge, and store this SS in that portion.

For the time being, he just wants to keep the SS extremely well wrapped up since he cannot give it daily attention as he wants to in the long run. :xyxthumbs

I think I saw the bag for sale at Griots Garage once. Pertty pricy comming from them as usual. Personally, I think it is a shame not to show off the beauty of the car so people can see it and admire it. Oh, another place I saw it at is www.performanceproducts.com. They sell car parts at discounted rates. Great price that can't be beat.

Why not rent a mini storage garage big enough for the car?

Then he could drive it without a lrage hassle.

Just a thought.

I'm just relaying what he wants to do..... not really my say.

But he did say that he won't like it if he cant get to the car to QD it like twice or 3 times a day like he usually would want to do.

This car is for shows and cruise-ins only, because he would like to keep the mileage low. ;)

Happy Birthday Gary. I hope you are not buried to deep in snow to enjoy your B-day!

Thanks everyone!

Not buried in snow (only a few inches) but freezing my, er, paint off - yeah, that's it, my paint.

Yesterday the high was -2F, last night low was -13F (better than the predicted -22F). Today the sun is out and it's about 14F on the front porch. Friday will be in the 40s - time to give Nelly a bath!

My wife baked me a chocolate cake (with coconut topping) - time for some coffee and cake.

Regards,
GEWB
