Further information on the hood



1Z PP and LC polishing pad on Metabo = nada - original scratches remained.



Menzerna IP and LC orange pad on Metabo = nada - LOTS of new "buffer/pad" scratches and original ones remained.



Hi Temp Heavy Cut and LC ornage pad on Makita = nada - LOTS of hologramming.



By now I'm pulling my hair out and starting to wonder if I would ever fix the hood!



OK, breath deep, have a smoke and a Diet Coke (Hmm, what else is in the polish box......)



SSR2.5 and LC polishing pad on Metabo = Better, most original scratches gone with some slight micromarring remaining. PROGRESS, finally!



SSR1 and LC finishing pad on Metabo - Beautifully clear, scratch free paint - only a little environmental pitting remaining, which can be lived with.



AIO and SG x 1 and voila.....
 
I've used many polishes and nothing can copmare to IP if your doing it right. The beauty of this product is that it will take out many swirls (Not Major ones) w/o even have to go to a finishing polish, especially on lighter colors. True, black will usually need FPII. If you got "new buffer pad/scratches," you had a flaw somewhere. Could have been something on pad, didn't shake the product, didn't work it enough, didn't dampen pad, or something like that? There are things that can cut much better than IP, but nothing I've tried causes less hazing and problems for a polish that's that aggressive. But heh, glad you figured it out.
 
SSR was a sleeper in the polish box - I had tried it once, but then I ended up with better results using M's PG.



Maybe a factor was the fibre glass body work on the Vette. Most of my other work was on Lightnings having metal under the paint (except on the ground effects). Never has such problems as today, Just cut out the scratches, cut out the micromarring then hit it with FP. Ford vs Chebby paint - who knows? But as stated above - the end result is what counts.

By the way, I don't know what SSR means, ... and .....

could you possibly list the process you went through to get that finish? What did you wash the car with, did you clay the car, did you use a PC or rotary, how long did you spend on that ? Any info would be appreciated, that is the look I want on my car!

I did not wash the Vette, but I'm told it was washed with Meguiar's Gold Class. The owner also used Mother's California Gold Clay Bar Kit.



The driver's side, trunk and rear bumper was polished with 1Z Paint Polish, with occasional side trips to 1Z Ultra for the heavier scratches, all using a Metabo rotary. It was finished off with Menzerna FP, a LC finishing pad on a PC @ 6 (the owner wanted to contribute as a means of learning). Then I had the documented problems with the hood and finished the passenger side using SSSR2.5 on the Metabo and SSR1 on a PC @ 6.

Black is black and will always look exceptional when well looked after. As for other recommendations, check out the "Click and Brag" section the see what others like Anthony Orosco, Scottwax, GRStyles and others use on their black(-ish) vehicles. Personally I think you need to go a long way to beat the Klasse twins. Professionals don't really have the time to apply several layers of the SG, but the individual can take as long as it takes without taking a "bottom line" hit. If you want to stay using synthetics, you can always top the SG (or even use interchangably) with 4 Star UPP, and Sonus Acrylic Sprtiz for QD'ing.



When you are happy with the look of the SG and/or the UPP, to take it to the next level, you can then apply Pinnacle Souveran, Natty's, P21S or S100 carnubas. You will wonder why the paint hasn't all driopped off - it looks SOOOOO GOOOOD!

Round about the time I pulled the SSR out of my polish box - I was pretty much in a state of panic :shocked , although the owner thought I was just a "little" concerned. When the job was done and the pictures were taken I told him about the level of my "concern" so he told me I hid the "panic" well. He is a friend in the Lightning club, so I was not worried about revealing my "inner self" to him..... ;)
 
great job looks damn good. You should send one of those Lightning owners to SA ive been dying to detail one. But i havent seen many on my side of town.:(

Actually there is a HALO Truck Show every March, which is preceeded a weekend or two earlier by what I call the "Bling-It Weekend" where myself and another try to polish out as may trucks as we can just for the show. You want to polish a L, come over this-a-way for that weekend and by the time you go home, you will have had your fill. Keep an eye opened on this board for the details, most likely under the "Detailing" forum.

The show is L only and last year we pulled in some trucks from SA, Austin, Waco and maybe Dallas as well as a ton from Houston.

Way to go Boop! Glad to see you over here. Now that your C5 is in great shape, this is the place where you will learn to take it above and beyond the point it is at now. Yes, that is possible! No doubt you have cruised the "Click & Brag" forum and seen the phenominal work of Scottwax, Anthony Orosco, GRStyles, and many, many others. Their skills humble my efforts.
