I definitely understand your point of view. I ran up into it at DFW airport when I was starting out detailing. I'd go into the parking garage and put flyers on several hundred cars in the afternoons I didn't have any details to do. One day, a security cop told me I'd have to stop. I asked why (this was well before 9/11 and increased security) and he said it was because the airport sells advertising in the form of billboards, signs, etc and any flyers being put out would have to go through them. Kind of hacked me off at the time, but looking back I can see how it would be unfair to those paying to advertise on airport property and I was doing it for free.

Definitely an understandable policy that is a necessary component of running a successful forum, but I don't believe in the one-strike-you're-out method. I know you've worked hard to create the type of demand that Autopia draws, but I do think people deserve the benefit of doubt rather than attribute the misbehavior in prior cases to all else.

To add insult to injury, the Google Autolink calling him out by name and stating that he is a "known spammer" is not spelled out in the forum rules. I might expect this type of behavior on some of the other boards, but not this one.

Wow, the auto-link and exposing to google took this thread to the top of the google search results... eek... And it looks like he has done this on other boards as well, so I can see David's point. It's hard to make a living these days running a website!

Yeah, but this wasn't the first strike. A year ago or more, before his detailing "wiki" which seemed to be devoid of any store links, Dan would tout his "detailing blog" which had direct links to his store, and would get pretty testy if you pointed that out.

EDIT: This type of spamming is a pretty fine line, and I'm glad I'm not the one who would have to make a call on it. Dan posted a lot of good info here, but then he would sprinkle it with this kind of subliminal adverstising.

Dan knew the rules and he broke them, end of story.

Did he have good info - yes!

Didn't always teeter the line about his blog, wiki and store - yes!

I don't think biting the hand that was feeding him on several boards is a good thing.
