Griot's Garage Open House in Indiana!

Accumulator...I hope you didn't take me the wrong way...there is a lot of great stuff that comes from China (sheesh, I have tons of it...you can't hardly get anything that's made anywhere else!). I wasn't suggesting you find a "domestic" source or stop recommending them. I just have a suspicion that they didn't lower the price when they resourced them...and we all know that they resourced them to get a lower price. We recently discovered that some of the Microfibertech towels are coming from China rather than Korea, but they are at a lower price point. As I kinda said before, my gripe is with the erosion of the US mfg. base, and if that's going to happen, at least we ought to be paying less for the product (since the guy who had the good mfg. job making the product is now working at WalMart).

Yeah, for the overwhelming majority of things, including shipping, I think Griot's can do much better in that area especially now given this resourcing.

Setec- Nah, we're cool and yeah, it would be nice if savings got passed along.

Like Bill D is saying with the shipping, it shouldn't cost as much to ship my stuff to Ohio now that it's not coming from Washington. But we'll see if I notice any difference in cost. Haven't so far, but things do arrive faster. Ranney sure charges reasonable shipping costs, far less than the amount printed on the USPS label, and if he can do it from that far away...

I like a lot of Griot's stuff, but like anything else you purchase, there might be a better price elsewhere (at the 'expense' of non-one-stop shopping).

The Speed Shine, Wheel Cleaner, and clay were not horribly priced for the larger sizes; hopefully the new center will reduce shipping costs.

The mail order bride selection is fabulous.

I like that Griot's mentions their sheepskin is made in Canada. All mine come from China. I'd be willing to overpay to try the Canadian one out. Anyone use it?

Oh, I have that 3 BHB set that Acumm. always peddles. I like them a lot and recomend them too.

I've been told that they will have four Experts on handat the Open House to assist you in learning to care for your car. Flying those experts in from Tacoma, Washington!

It is curious. They say won't do direct retail sales from their Distribution Center, but yet they are aggressively encouraging locals to come visit... They are spending a chunk of change to show us something we can't use. :nixweiss :nixweiss

Course, if I were able to enjoy their profit margins... Oh well, I'll try to stop by - depends on how busy we are that day.

Jim

When they had their distribution center in Tacoma, they also had a walk in store (in fact, they still do).

They may not need a storefront in Plainfield, but it sure would be nice to be able to order over the internet and have the order held for a "counter pickup".

I'm going, but if they don't start to offer counter pickups in the future, I won't be ordering from them. It's the principle of the thing!

You realize you're going to have to pay state sales tax now, regardless of how you get your stuff from Griot's, presuming they have that kind of thing in Indiana.

Okay, question. How do you pronounce it? I've always thought it was like Voight / Voit, (like John or the balls). But on the website, it looks like 'Gree'? Any illumination?

And yes, us Hoosiers now have to pay sales tax. That was the first thing that alerted me to where it was shipping from when I placed my order. And I guess I don't understand all the complaint about shipping charges. I paid $7.99 on my last order for about a 15 lb. box-probably not too far off of actual UPS rates. Now, I can see if you're ordering an expensive, lightweight item that it could get pricey, but their rates aren't too bad when you consider the weight when they're shipping gallons of liquids. I ship UPS almost everyday, and although we charge actual rates, we should charge more-there is a lot that goes into packaging-materials, time, etc. You can either pay for it in the product, or in the shipping-but one way or the other, you're going to pay.

It's pronounced Gree-oh's. The T is silent.

Since the distribution ctr is in Indiana and would ship to Indiana, I'd pay sales tax anyway, plus shipping. So I'd rather not pay the shipping. Besides, I just don't want to pay for someone to have UPS bring me something when they are 1/2 mile from my office door!

"Gree"- "Oh" meaning Gr "long e"* - "long o"

I'll be there - I am going to go into work for a little bit beforehand - I'm just 1/2 mile from their building.

But be forewarned: My car is not Autopia clean at the moment! I can't wait until my new house is ready in October with a driveway and waterhose to call my own!!! I'll be stocking up on supplies tomorrow. :grinno:

Well, the Griot's open house seems to have been a success! It was very busy, and a lot of fun!

Good news for anyone in the Indy area: they told us that they now offer "will call" pickups. You simply order from the toll free # or internet, and then indicate that you will pick up. That will save a bundle on shipping charges!

They also plan to have a retail storefront in the next year or two.
