Got my new baby.... soooo confused! 56K warning!

So, I finally got my dream car. Picked her up last week, and I'm totally confused about how I should take care of it.

Clay, microfiber, zaino, pswhatever from the HD dealer, blitz, porter cable, waffle weave, Klasse SG, leatherique, pinnacle... the list goes on and on! In my younger days, with cars I wasn't so obsessed with, it was easy to grab Mother's and end up satisfied.

I found this website hoping to give me some direction, and I'm now more wrapped around the axle than I was before I got here. Can anybody tell a newbie where to start?

nice. . .first off, you picked a good color as far as ease of keeping clean. Silver does wonders to make a car look clean when dirty, looks outstanding when clean, and hides some defects better.

A black car would be a pain to keep clean.

beautiful car BTW. . .I love those. . .any M3/M5 is darn secsay if you ask me.

I'm a little partion to Zaino and Klasse myself. I have and like S100 (the stuff from the HG dealer PS12 (IIRC) is the "Car" version of S100. . .same thing only a few bucks more. Get the S100 it's great topper, though might not have the effects on silver that I had on my blue WRX when I had it. I've been hearing some good stuff about NXT lately but haven't had the chance to test it out yet.

good luck, happy detailing and keep up posted

Hope this wasn't too vague.

Thanks David!

How does this sound?

Clay first, then I was going to do 2-3 applications of Klasse SG over a 2-3 week period, and finally P21s in week 4.

Does this make sense?

Also, what do you folks recommend as a quick detailing spray?

Alex

From one detailing newbie to another, welcome to Autopia :wavey . Nice car, and a very nice shade of silver.

I've started doing much the same thing you plan on doing on my silver Accord, and I'm really happy with the results. I've done the clay and one layer of SG so far, but I also did a layer of Klasse AIO before the SG. I've got two more layers of SG to go before topping off with S100.

I'd recommend doing a search and reading all about Klasse SG before you start though. It can be tricky to apply, but all that reading made it go a little smoother.

Following the recommendations in some of the Klasse threads that I read, I picked up some Meguair's Final Inspection QD to use during the time it takes to layer my SG. I'll let somebody else recommend a good general purpose QD though. I just use Mother's Showtime the rest of time.

Have fun detailing!

If you haven't got it yet, I would hold off on the P21S until after you have applied the Klasse, and see how you like it first. SG is very very reflective, and you may decide that you like the look. And as Fish suggested, do the AIO after reading the various threads on the application, but particularly the JimWH application thread, and also the BillNorth method. Then following up with the first coat of SG immediately. From then on, you can do a layer a day or a week (after a wash).

Do the AIO. You won't regret. No matter how clean you THINK the car is now, you won't believe it's shine after AIO.

Thanks for the helpful posts. Now for my next question:

Are there typically retail outlets that carry detailing products, like Klasse SG and AIO? I'd order them online, but I'd like to get started this weekend....

Alex

Hi Alex

Welcome to Autopia!

Generally speaking it is hard to find Klasse in retail outlets. I had to buy mine online. Check out http://www.properautocare.com and also the Autopia Shop by clicking "Shop!" above. Also, you can also read the reviews in the review section.

:xyxthumbs

I used the same process as you describe above except used 3M SMR and AIO after the SMR to clean up left over residue. All by hand! :shocked My arm fell off later that night. j/k

I ended up more than pleased with the results.

Dave

Alex, beautiful car. You may want to hit the "Learn" button on the upper right hand corner of the screen. You will learn more about keeping your ride looking good.

:welcome

Before you apply SG, you will need to apply AIO.

Wash, clay, maybe wash again (if you are totally anal), buy a 5 or 10 pack of MF's at WallyWorld, then using Bill North Wipe On, Wipe Off method, AIO, SG, wait a week SG again, wait a week and SG #3.

Now that you vehicle is well protected, don't rush, read, search, ask questions, then and only then buy other stuff. Take your time, do a lot of research - it is all here, you just gotta hunt it up.

It is too easy to drop $500-$1000 a year in this hobby, so first make sure your ride is protected. That will give you the time for proper research and the time to collect/purchase the goodies you will want to use later when you jump off into the deep-end.

BTW - it is really, really deep! :D

There's nothing i can say on this site to that :p

:welcome

It's all good advice you've had so far :)

I would add that if you use the AIO and SG, make sure you do your wheels too. Remove them first, AIO them and then at least 2 layers of SG. That way the nasty horrible BMW brake dust will clean off real easy :)

It may be seem excessive removing wheels to apply the SG to the back as well, but trust me, it will be worth it long term.

Also wash with sheepshin mitt (2 bucket method). Only use quality MF's on your paintwork, pakshak and exceldetail to name 2 great suppliers. WW drying towels also highly recommended.

Sweet Ride!!!!!! I love those M3's.

Definitely take the wheels off and apply as tnoy66 has mentioned. You will not regret it. AIO and SG are awesome together and Im not sure if you will need the P21S either. You will be amazed by the shine that just the AIO gives you. Then after 2-3 coats of SG it will be stunning.

Remember to keep reading on this site as it has ALL the information about anything you will ever need.

Welcome to Autopia and good luck.

Thanks!

I'm assuming that the AIO and 2 layers of SG for the wheels can all be done at one time, right? (Please say yes...)

Also, what are WW drying towels?

Alex

WW= waffle weave micro fibre.

you will have to wait to do the second coat of SG or you will haave a really big mess.

check out www.pakshak.com Ranney is a really cool guy and you get a discount if you tell him your with autopia. they have all of the MF(micro fibres) you will need.

Sadly no, you can do the AIO and follow immediately with 1 layer of SG . Then you need to wait (ideally) a minimum of 24 hours before the next SG. If you only get to clean your car once a week, then just repeat the SG the following week.

When you notice brake dust sticking more to the wheels......months away....you should then do it all again.

You'll be an expert wheel fitter in no time :D Oh yea, use a proper hydraulic jack and axle stands too, the BMW jack is *@%!

WW = waffle weave :) They are micofibre (MF) towels, but with a different construction to terry type MF towels. They soak up tons of water, for your car I'd recommend 2, you may only need 1 but if you then drop it you need another clean one. Lots of info on towels throughout the site :)

Thanks again. How long do I have to wait between SG coats on the wheels?

Alex

No problem. When you are finished post some pics. of the finished produst. Remember to take your time and don't get frustrated if it takes you close to 5-6 hours to completely to the job. Don't cut corners as you will find that just creates problems.

Good luck again and hope to see more of that BEAUTIFUL M3!!!!!!!

Good advice on the wheels. However, I might add that if you don't feel like taking the wheels off a second time, just wash and do the outside the second week. The protection will still be there, but the second coat will give you better shine. And remember not to use any wheel cleaners after you do the SG, or it will be removed. Just a wash mitt and carsoap will do. You'll see.
