Got a great Compliment Yesterday

Yesterday A supervisor of a different department Came up to me and asked about me detailing cars and my prices, I asked about his car, which was a truck. Any how I went out and looked at it and came back in and gave him a price. He said ok and he would get back to me later…..So about 3hours later he comes back and tells me that he heard that I was a Rip off! I was like ummm ok… Could you explain? HE said “I have been talking to some people about your business and they said you Detail every car like it is a show car, and everyday cars don’t need that good of a detail!â€ I just stood there with a blank look on my face.. then I said “well that is one of the best complements I have had in a long timeâ€ he saidâ€ HUH?â€ Then I said in a crappy voice “Ill tell you what, I try my best to make every car that rolls out of my garage look the best that it can, If it isn’t the best you don’t pay. If you want a Half *** job, go to someone else, My job is to treat every car like it IS a show car, Doing everything I can to make it look better than it was when it rolled off the line at the factory. Sorry that is not what you want, maybe I am not the detailer for youâ€ Then he just looked at me and says “I will give you a call soon to get my truck done, It needs itâ€ LOL what a great day :)

LOL Wow. I wish I could buy a bad rap like that. With reviews like that, who needs referals? lolol :xyxthumbs You should tell him that the half-assed jobs cost more because it is more work for you to restrain yourself from fixing everything you possibly can. lol

Nice job on giving it back to him diplomatically. I will never understand some people sometimes. You should have told him that if he wanted a "half job" that he can always get his car detailed at any local car wash. I have seen their work.....

Excellent response RedCar. Isn't it amazing the mentality of some people or is it the "dumbing Down" of the culture we are now living in? Where doing a half arse job is the norm.:nixweiss

This is probably why we receive some of those nasty looks when we drive our ultra detailed cars. Jealousy? Stupidity?:nixweiss

Keep up the good work RedCar.:xyxthumbs :wavey

Great reply to him, like everyone has said. What bothers me the worst is that people spend anywhere between $9,000 and on up for a vehicle, then treat it like complete garbage! If I spend that much money on ANYTHING, I am going to keep it in the best shape I can! I just can't seem to wrap my mind around the thought of NOT taking car of your vehicle. Even if I bought a 1988 Hyundai Excel for $500... I'd take care of it as best as I could.

I beginning to wonder if it's true that American's just want to do enough to squeak by. Don't get me wrong, I'm proud to be American and always will be, but the more and more I see of this lazy, just-get-me-by attitude I just want to scream.

Great reply Red! I have never been to a detailer, I have always done my cars myself. I have been getting asked to detail peoples cars on the side. I thought maybe I would do it, maybe a couple cars a month. But i have no idea what's fair to charge. What would be some pricing?

That is a good topic to do some searching on. There have been several threads discussing that very topic at length. :xyxthumbs

The underlying message is you take pride in your work. Good for you.

Agreed. I also detail every car as if it was my own. I don't do half-butt jobs either. There are lots of hackers that will be glad to accomadate that guy if that is the type of work he is looking for.

Every car deserves to be detailed properly for a paying customer.

The bitterness of a poor quality detailing job remains long after the sweetness of the low price....

Red great answer. When you do this for a living you hear comments like this all the time. People will come in and tell you that you are expensive. I then explain to them the difference between us and everyone else out there if that doesn't sell them I say fine. Once they try the competition, I believe they will eventually come back to us. Love what you do and do what you love, then do it better than anyone else. This way you will never have to look over your shoulder.

I have been told that "I charge too much".... and I can't tell you how many times I have "redetailed" cars that were done by others.... including some of the "professional shops" in the area, who charge a hell of a lot more than I do!

That screams of an early warning. All he is going to dwell on is the price, no matter what kind of job you do, parting with cash is going to be an issue for him. I could be wrong but I'd bet two weeks after you do the car he is going to come back to you with issues or walk around saying "I could have gotten it done cheaper by so and so." I wouldnt detail that fellas car if he paid me double, never mind that you have to work with him. Just my 2 cents.....

Warning, Mr. Smith!

I completely agree. You don't need customers like that anyway.
