well the title says it all I need an expert on clay bars to see if this stuff really is any good, dont want to waste it on my car and mess up the paint somehow.

Ill send around a 1-2 ounce sample, should be enough to use on 1 or 2 cars easily just need a name and address, first reply to this thread and then send me an email to [email protected] and Ill send it to ya today or tomorrow latest

thank you for the help

-Jimmy

I don't think you'll need to send it to anyone, just tell us the brand name...basically all clay comes from only a small handful of manufacturers, and the only one I've ever had problems with is Meguiar's clay (streaks).

Why don't you just tell us what the bar is, and someone can reply? If it can be bought anywhere in North America, I am sure someone here has already tried it.

Well I got some EXCELLENT advice in a PM which had the names of some "eperts" Im gonna PM or email them seperately and see if any of them can help me out

but here is a pic of the bar I ripped off about 2 ounces from it to mail out, here is the rest, I lowered the quality of the pic in half so it wouldn't take so long to download but its still petty clear

cheers

OKAY haha I removed the pic, actually Im not at home Im in my car right now and this laptop may have wireless BUT its a P5 (EXTREMELY SLOW) and I have no editing software, and MS paint wont do JPG's

thx Scott

oh yeah I got the bar from a wholesaler so it isnt motehrs or any big name like that. Trust me if I knew who made it I would DEF. tell you guys.

cheers

It looks like Meguiars commerical clay bar to me. Just go ahead and try it in an inconspicious place on your car.

YOWZA, Jimmy!!! That's such a high-res photo of your hand that -- if only I were Miss Cleo, I could read your fortune. ("Hmmm ... long lifeline, but what's that I see here in your love line?...") :D

How about just cropping out everything but the actual clay bar?

Hey thx Scott, like I said abovein my edited post Im runnig a simple P5 laptop EXTREMELY slow and no editing software, I had to use my camera to convert the 6 megapixel image down to a 2 megapixel one.

Scott, the thing of it is I just dont have any basis at all to compare this bar with thats why I needed somebodys help, I may think its good stuff but in reality may be terrible.. does that make any sense?

I heard there are different grades of clay bars and not all are meant for your car.

Is there anything particular I should be looking for?

and Im going to use Meguiars Quick Detailer is that acceptable?

If the clay bar removes imbedded grit and overspray from the paint without leaving any scratches, then it is doing what it is meant to do. Quick Detailer is fine to you.

BTW, download the free image optimizer from www.xat.com -it literally took mere seconds to crop and resize that pic.

There are a couple things you could tell us that would help.

Is the clay really soft or is it firm? It kinda looks like taffy the way you have it there in your hand. Makes me believe it is soft. if it is soft then its probably not a really super agressive clay. Probably not an overspray grade or something like that.

Have you tried it on your car? I know that some clay seems to be mild and soft and then when you put it on your car it is like using 1000 grit sandpaper. If you've used on a small area and there aren't scratches left behind then it is mild enough for your car.

QD is QD. As far as clay lube goes you could use soap and water and get the same performance as you would using a 10 dollar bottle of QD. Use whatever you have handy.

Are you sure it is automotive grade clay? Someone tried an experiment with that tacky clay you use to hang posters on your wall. That stuff worked similar to clay but I'll bet it didn't suspend the dirt particles as well. I would make sure that it was automotive grade clay before using it. No matter how soft or mild it is, if it wasn't made for your car then you could do more harm than help. It does look like a Meguiar's commercial bar, but that's just the looks. I would ask the wholesaler you bought it from just to be sure.

Its definately quite firm, I just saw some mothers sitting at autozone "on sale" for 20 dollars for a 3 ounce bar, which seemed quite a bit softer.

I tried it on a part of the car and if I hit a part that I by mistake had not QD'ed the clay would leave a really thick and sticky residue behind, almost like rubbing an eraser against the car one of thsoe type of lines. took a buncha QD and Microfiber towel to get rid of it.

It feels tremendously smoother, but I think I might have pushed down to hard on the clay because I see scratches in the paint now.

Im dont feel so confident about this product anymore...

20 bucks for 3 ounces??? That is insane!!! I'm having trouble believing that I can get a 200 gram bar of Clay Magic for the same price as 3 ounces of Mother's on sale. One ounce is about 28 grams. :shocked Maybe I've got my measurements mixed up. That just seems a little crazy.

Clay shouldn't require much pressure. It should just glide along the lube and pick up particles. If you are pushing then you will scratch your paint no matter what grade you are using. Make sure you fold the clay a lot too. Especially if the car is really dirty.

I think you should just try it yourself and share the results with us - the worst thing that's going to happen is that it may streak a little.

Autopia used to be all about testing, evaluating, scrutinizing and playing around with products on your own, then sharing the results with everyone and comparing notes. I say "used to be", because lately, it seems like many are afraid to "do the wrong thing".

Just try it, let us know your thoughts, tell us where to get it and we'll go from there! :)

Talk to the wholesaler or distributor that you bought the clay from. They will have information on what they sell.

Once you find out the details of the bar you can let us in.

Also, as geeky said try the bar in the mean time and let us know the results.

From the look of the I think it could be Erazer or meguiars (as previously mentioned).
