Well, I gave it one last try. I bought two cans of Goof-Off (#1...the nasty stuff) and hosed the carpeting with it. I let it sit for about 15 minutes, then hosed them down with ZEP multi-purpose orange degreaser and DAWN. Then I scrubbed them with a brush and nearly drown them with the hose.
After they dried, there were a few small areas where the carpets felt 'oily' but the "sticky/gooey" feeling was gone. HOWEVER, the sound deadening insulation fell off the back as soon as I picked up the carpets to rinse them
(oops).
Believe it or not, the customer was THRILLED.
Moral of this story...Run, don't walk if someone spills engine treatment anywhere near carpeting!!!!
