Glaze/Sealant compatibility?

Being an engineer, I tend to dwell on ideas that pop into my head until some resolution is obtained. Here is what I have been knocking around for the past couple days...

Ideally, we would all like to go through the whole wash-clay-correct-protect regiment but sometimes the finish is in pretty good shape and doesn’t warrant a full polish. Say for instance, a polish was used to spot treat some minor issues and was followed by a glaze to give the paint of the whole vehicle a little extra pop. Is it then ok to follow up with a sealant for extended protection or is this wasting time? From what I gathered from this website, it is common practice to wipe down with Iso. alcohol to remove polishing oils prior to sealant application. However, glazes contain various oils and “wetting-agents. It makes sense that a carnauba would benefit but would these agents inhibit proper sealant adhesion? My confusion arises when some manufacturers (BF, Menzerna, etc.) suggest the use of their glaze with a sealant for the most aesthetically pleasing results.

Are the fillers and “wetting-agents in glazes much different from those contained in polishes? What are your thoughts in general? Have you had any adverse results with particular products?

As a general rule, you can not use sealants after glazes as they don't bond. I find that glazes even reduce the durability of waxes, too. There are sealant friendly glazes, however(Sonus SwirlBuster, CG Acrylic Glaze).

I know that RMG/EXP is a good combo

if you are looking for a glaze and sealant

then I like to top it with NB

good luck

Prima Amigo (glaze) works well with Prima Epic (sealant), from the little that I've tried. Lasted over a month, so far, and still going. It is intended to be a sealant friendly glaze, though.

Apparently it doesn't work so hot with Zaino, however.

Interesting responses, maybe it would have been beneficial to pay attention in my organic chem. classes. In any event, I’ve been using BF Gloss Enhancing Polish in conjunction with their all finish paint protectant. Although I have been pleased thus far I really don’t have much to compare it to. That’s where you guys come in.

As an aside, I do prefer the look of a carnauba and have topped with both M26, 3M perfect-it paste, and P21S. I wasn’t impressed with the durability of the M26 and P21S hasn’t proven to be any worse (but is definitely worth it for looks).

I'd check on that one. :wow: I could see some products not mixing, but that may not be the fairest blanket statement about all glazes. I've sealed after glazing for years and never noticed any bonding failures. What are you supposed to use instead of a glaze then?

Well since we are on a roll here...what does everyone think of RMG under Wolfgang? My current plan for summer was to go RMG -> Wolfgang -> Souveran...but I might skip the RMG if it means the Wolfgang won't bond properly to the paint...

Menzerna has a glaze that you can use before using their FMJ, and all of Meguiars products are compatible so you can use their #3 or #7 glaze and then their #21 sealant.
