Getting rid of swirl marks by hand.

Please give me some authoritative sources for your belief that you need only wait 36 to 72 hours. This is totally contrary to all the information I have received from Sikkens and Ford Motor Company.



Just give me documented evidence and I will admit my error. I can give you information from Ford Motor Company and will ask Sikkens for documented proof.

Intermezzo and Scottwax: Thanks for the post about DAC/P and the method you use to apply. I believe that helps to answer Taxlady's question. Can you compare DAC/P to the 3M products.

The only 3M products I have used are the Perfect It wax and Imperial Hand Glaze. IMO, Meguiars Hand Polish is easier to use than IHG and leaves the paint looking even wetter. Other than that, I really cannot compare products.

No offense but late model paint technology doesn't breathe or need long times to cure, that's an old myth.. once it cures that's it..... The older lacquers and enamels needed time for the solvents to evaporate and release, that is where the term "paint breathes" comes from. Wax would seal the paint and prevent the solvents from releasing. This led to a whole bunch of paint related problems. That's why paint manufacturers still tell you not to apply WAX for thirty days. Because WAX does not let the paint breathe.. and actually suffocates it.. Funny ain't it....



All urethane paints and late technology paints use a catalyst for

hardening and curing. The paint is fully cured in about 36 to 72 hours. If you think about it, since the base coat is sealed from the atmosphere how can the base coat ever dry (the base coat is sprayed with clear while the base is still tacky wet) unless it has a hardener built in the mixture when the base color is mixed with the base maker.

I've only used 3M's Finesse-It 2 and not DACP. I only recommended DACP because it gets high praise here and is described as similar in abrasiveness to FI-2. Also, a lot of people here seem to feel that it is easier to work with because of its polishing oil content. In other words, FI-2 is almost a pure cleaner with little polishing agents (oils/fillers) while DACP is a little of both.
 
Since I live in Canada, I can get most of the Meguiar's stuff. Haven't found a source of 3M stuff yet. I guess I should check out their website and see if they list dealers.

Taxlady, I know NAPA is big in the US, but here in Vancouver there's something called UAP/NAPA and I guess they're affiliated somehow (?) Anyway, that's where I got my 3M SMR from. They also carry Meguiars and some EO stuff. Try looking for NAPA or UAP/NAPA.

I have a question about the "before" picture posted by scottywax. I can definitely see the swirl marks on the left side of the hood, but are the swirled "dashes" on the right edge of the hood surrounding the center of the light source considered swirl marks too? I have these types of marks all over my F-150 and I'm trying to get them out (Meguiars #9)

Yes, those are swirl-marks also. They look a little different because they were caused by towels. The swirls on the left were caused by the improper use of a buffer.
